It was a privilege to be invited to .shs to speak to students about engineering.

I shared my journey from studying engineering at The University of Western Australia to working around the world with Baker Hughes as a Logging While Drilling Engineer.

One of the highlights was an interactive “triple combo” well log activity, where students used Year 11/12 Physics and Chemistry concepts to identify potential oil and gas zones.

We also discussed the importance of safety in engineering, including H2S and asbestos risks on well / mine sites.

Grateful for the opportunity and the engagement from the students throughout the session.

Save this for when you’re feeling behind.

Most students don’t fall behind because they’re not capable; they fall behind because they don’t have a clear way to get back on track.

Start by dropping the pressure to fix everything at once.

Forgive the delay. What matters now is what you do next.

Break your work into small, clear tasks you can actually finish. This builds momentum and gives you direction.

Then make a simple plan, even just 3 tasks for the day is enough to cut through the mental chaos.

Focus on the topics you struggle with most first, and remember, you don’t need to catch up on all of your content in 1 day.

Stay consistent with that, and you’ll be surprised how fast things turn around.

Save this for when you’re feeling behind.

This is Breanna, representing Australia in rhythmic gymnastics on the world stage.

We’re proud to support students like her, not just in school, but in everything they’re chasing outside of it too.

With our digital notes, lesson recordings, and summaries, students can revisit content anywhere, anytime, so sport, work, and school don’t have to compete with each other.

We’re cheering for you Breanna. Make Australia proud.

Year 12 Chem Class Notes: Redox Applications

OILRIG: Oxidation Is Loss (e⁻), Reduction Is Gain (e⁻). The oxidant gets reduced; the reductant gets oxidised.

Oxidation Numbers the rules:
→ Free elements = 0
→ Simple ions = their charge
→ H = +1 in most compounds (exception: −1 in metal hydrides)
→ O = −2 in most compounds (exception: −1 in peroxides, +2 when bonded to F)
→ Sum of oxidation numbers in a neutral compound = 0
→ Sum of oxidation numbers in a polyatomic ion = charge on the ion

Balancing Half-Equations (KOHES)
→ Key elements first (everything except O and H)
→ O balance with H₂O
→ H balance with H⁺
→ Electrons to balance charge
→ Simplify (cancel where possible)

Standard Reduction Potentials (E°)
→ Tables list everything as reductions
→ Reverse a half-equation for oxidation, flip the E° sign
→ Add the adjusted E° values: if E°cell > 0, the reaction is spontaneous

Galvanic Cells
→ Anode = oxidation (negative terminal)
→ Cathode = reduction (positive terminal)
→ Electrons flow: anode → cathode through the external circuit

Salt Bridge (anions to anode, cartons to cathode)
→ Contains a soluble inert electrolyte (e.g. KNO₃)
→ Spectator ions (K⁺ and NO₃⁻) migrate between half-cells
→ Maintains electrical neutrality in each half-cell
→ Completes the internal circuit. No salt bridge, no sustained current.
