Art N Ani seeks to develop verbal, written and visual literacy, creativity, imagination and an enterprising spirit through learning and doing something that children already love and are excited about - drawing and cartooning. The unique aspect of this club is the development of drawings into movement and animation with drawings by hand, on tablet apps and computer software. Why learn and do anima

tion in primary school? A pilot program in 2010-11 demonstrated that primary school children were able to improve their drawing skills, make a flipbook, master simple 2-d and 3-d animation software, learn and entertain themselves, cooperate with and learn from each other (sibling learning), develop imaginary characters, voice act and (older students) piece together the saved results into Microsoft Movie-maker. Benefits
• Is fun all by itself.
• Develops visual literacy- the ability to perceive, interpret and learn from objects and visual media.
• Promotes self-esteem and confidence through achievement.
• Promotes an enterprising spirit. We will create e-comics, T-shirt designs, post our animations on-line and enter competitions. That big break will come!
• Learning something that children already love re-connects learning with an immediate reward and a reason to do it. Developing good line-drawings skills is important for many creative professions.
• Collaborating with each other to make our final movies will develop many skills in self-organisation, cooperation, group and self-learning, creative story-telling, completing tasks. Be the director, script writer, artists, voice actors, foley artist (sound-effects), musician, editor.
• Students who follow the club each year will become accomplished cartoonists and mini movie-makers by Y6 or 7. This will be a strong start in any high school media or performing arts program.

Hello to all Art N Ani followers. Art N Ani still sleeps while I am far away in Mozambique. It looks possible I may finish here in May and return to Perth.
I'm thinking that Art N Ani will go on-line.

This term I have a big after-school club at Wesley College. We have been focusing on drawings and flipbook making so far but last session we began with clay! A big hit.

Another term finished!
Kids have discovered that not all fun games are on an electronic device. Munchkin card game has wonderful illustrations on the cards, very funny and is a big hit.
Troll and Mods faces were also a big hit this term. We use mainly 2 Android Apps which make use of photos in the Gallery or use the tablet camera to take a photo. Try ModFace Free and Troll Face Photo at home. Paper Camera app is our preferred cartoon-ish photo maker which can be activated within the above apps to import a photo. Add speech bubbles to make up pictures that can be used to complete a comic book and bingo!
The girls were fasci9nated with ComiPo (from Smith Micro) for Windows PC. Make a Manga comic book without drawing (that has to be a good idea). Next term we'll import the ModFace images as backgrounds in a ComiPo comic page, add speech bubbles and special effects to make a Mod/Troll Face comic book.
A special welcome next term to Years 1-4 at Wesley College in South Perth.
Perth College will continue with the upper Junior School this time. The kids love Nadia, who has been their club leader. She will also be continuing with Upper Swan Primary. Go Nadia!
Website update planned for this term holiday. The existing one was hurriedly put together so I could register this page! Ha!

Upper Swan Primary and Perth College after-school clubs starting this term. Existing clubs at Bayswater, Hillcrest, West Morley, Hollywood.
School holiday programs and each Thursday night at 42 Rudloc Rd, Morley (Derrick Ernst neighbourhood Centre).

2014 Holiday Program just completed at the Derrick Ernst Neighbourhood Centre in Morley. Thanks to the centre staff who were most helpful.
The kids did enjoy themselves and some amazing works were done.
Drawing, flipbooks, under-camera animation, Claymation and comics - we did it all over 4 days, 3 hours a day.
I think Oliver's record of 301 frames for his animated drawing will stand for some time.

There will be a regular Thursday evening session for 1.5 hours, 6.30-8.00pm at the centre, starting 1st May.

Next term new after-school clubs will be starting in Upper Swan Primary and Perth College.

2014 Holiday Program.
Commencing 9.30am-12.00pm Monday 6th January at the Ingelwood Civic Centre. 4 sessions per week, Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri. $100 for all, or $25 per day session.
