Fun Fact Friday, January 2017. We got it wrong.
Elephants can't jump. Neither can sloths, hippos or rhinos.
That poster has been up nine years. Plenty of people knew. Nobody said anything.
Not unkindness. Just quiet. Most missing feedback looks exactly like this.
Grab a coffee, read the blog, and think of the one person you owe a straight answer.

You know that face.
You have seen it in a meeting. Possibly this week. Possibly on someone who used to be your most switched-on person.
Nobody escalates disengagement. There is no form for it, no incident report, no number on a dashboard. It just quietly becomes how the team is.
Most leaders read it as a motivation problem and reach for a pizza and a pep talk. It is almost never a motivation problem.
FLAT to ALIGNED is half a day that finds out what it actually is. Curiosity first, then some honest critical thinking, then the conversation nobody has been having, then alignment. Your team, your real issues, no theory.
If a particular face turned up in your head while you were reading this, send me a message. Happy to talk it through before you decide anything.

I'm not going to tell you what happened this week.
I will tell you that cats have been on my mind ever since. Not by choice.
Here's where that led me:

Cats have 32 muscles in each ear. Humans have six.
They can rotate an ear 180 degrees and pinpoint a sound to within eight centimeters, while appearing to ignore you entirely.

Most leaders have the opposite problem. They look like they're listening and hear almost nothing.

My week would have gone differently if the room had been full of cats. They'd have heard exactly what I meant.

This week, try the cat's version. Rotate toward one person, once, and hear the thing they didn't quite say out loud.

Four sentences. One of them is you this fortnight.

"I'm the one who got something wrong."
"I haven't had time for the conversations I owe people."
"There's a number and a date, and neither is moving."
"I'm being asked for answers I don't have yet."

Whichever one you picked, that's the pressure you're carrying. And it's quietly turning one of your best leadership behaviours into a forgery of itself.

Straight talk becomes brutal honesty. Listening becomes waiting to talk. Extending trust becomes checking in four times before lunch and calling it empowerment.

Not because you're a fraud. Because a strength running under load, with the situational read switched off, looks almost identical to the real thing. To everyone except your team.

Which of the four did you pick? Tell me below — I'll bet the room splits fairly evenly.

The full piece, and all 13 of them, is in the first comment.

The sloth isn't winning any races. He's also not quitting.
Two things leaders forget: momentum beats speed, and stopping is the only move that guarantees nothing changes.
So pick one thing this week. The conversation you've been putting off. The feedback sitting in your notes app. The thing you said you'd fix a month ago.
That'll do. Just don't stop.
