Peter de Been—one of the true pioneers of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Australia—for a special seminar at Legion 13 Cannington.

A sixth-degree black belt under the legendary Carlos Gracie Jr, Peter founded the Australian Federation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 1994 and has spent more than three decades helping shape the sport in Australia.

With experience across seven Pan-American Championships, six World Championships and international superfights, Peter brings a level of technical knowledge and proven competition experience that few instructors can match.

Expect world-class technique, detailed concepts and lessons developed over a lifetime on the mats.

Today we say goodbye to Johnny as he heads back to Taiwan.

Johnny has been a fantastic part of our BJJ team, always bringing a positive attitude, a willingness to learn, and great respect for everyone on the mats. He’s been a valued training partner and teammate, and he’ll definitely be missed around the gym.

We wish you all the very best back home, Johnny. Thank you for being part of the Legion 13 family. The doors are always open, and we hope to see you back on the mats again one day. Safe travels, mate!

Black Belt. Earned.

Today we celebrate a milestone years in the making.

Congratulations to Andy on receiving his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt.

In a world that wants everything instantly, a black belt stands as a reminder that some things simply can’t be rushed. The road to black belt is meant to be long. It’s meant to be difficult. It’s meant to test your patience, your discipline, and your willingness to keep showing up when progress feels slow.

There are no shortcuts. No overnight success stories.

Just thousands of rounds, countless hours on the mats, victories, setbacks, injuries, lessons, and the determination to keep moving forward.

A black belt isn’t the reward for being talented—it’s the reward for refusing to quit.

Our early morning boxing classes will be taking a short hiatus over winter.

The colder mornings have a way of testing everyone’s commitment, so we’re hitting pause for now and focusing on delivering the best possible experience when the weather warms up.

The good news?

We’ll be back bigger, better, and stronger with fresh energy, great sessions, and plenty of opportunities to sharpen your boxing skills.

Looking to keep improving over winter?
Private boxing sessions will still be available throughout the break. Whether you’re looking to work on technique, fitness, pad work, or prepare for competition, we’ve got you covered.

Why do Bjj
People start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for different reasons, but the ones who stay usually realise it gives them far more than just “learning to fight.”

Some of the biggest reasons:

* Real self-defence
BJJ is one of the few martial arts where smaller people can realistically control larger opponents using leverage, positioning, and technique.
* Confidence without aggression
A lot of people become calmer after training because they’re regularly put under pressure and learn to stay composed.
* Fitness that doesn’t feel like cardio
Rolling is exhausting, but because it’s problem-solving and competitive, most people enjoy it more than traditional gym workouts.
* Mental challenge
It’s often described as “physical chess.” You’re constantly solving problems, adapting, and learning patterns.
