On Wednesday 17 June, 44 Mercedes College students will take part in the Ponytail Project, cutting their hair in support of Australians impacted by cancer.
With 2 in 5 Australians diagnosed by age 85 and over 169,000 diagnoses each year, this is a cause that touches us all.

As part of our Respectful Relationships program this term, students have explored key themes through both classroom discussions and practical experiences, including ballroom dancing lessons delivered in collaboration with Trinity College.
Last week, this partnership continued as the Mercedes and Trinity Year 9 cohorts came together with Trinity staff and qualified sexologist Ms Annika Holland for an important joint session on consent and respectful relationships. In a safe and supportive environment, students were encouraged to engage openly, ask questions, and reflect on how to build healthy, respectful connections.
While these conversations can at times feel uncomfortable, they are essential in empowering young people with the knowledge and confidence to make informed and respectful choices.
We are proud to provide opportunities like this that support our students at such an important stage in their development.

On Wednesday June 17, 40 Mercedes College students will take part in the Ponytail Project, courageously cutting their hair in support of Australians impacted by cancer. Their ponytails will help create wigs for those experiencing hair loss during treatment, while funds raised will go directly towards Cancer Council’s life-changing research and support services.
Cancer is not a distant issue affecting only a small number of people, it is something that touches almost every Australian family in some way. This year alone, more than 169,000 Australians are expected to be diagnosed with cancer. That means every single day, over 460 people will have their lives changed in an instant by hearing the words, “you have cancer.”
For many families, the impact is devastating. Around 53,000 Australians lost their lives to cancer in 2025, making cancer responsible for almost 3 in every 10 deaths across Australia. Close to one million Australians have been diagnosed with cancer within the last decade alone, and with 2 in 5 Australians expected to face cancer by the age of 85, it is a reality that continues to affect communities every single day.
This initative is about more than cutting hair. It is about standing beside those going through some of the hardest moments of their lives and showing that they are not facing it alone. It is about helping fund research that leads to better treatments, stronger support systems and hope for the future.
Every donation, every ponytail and every conversation sparked through this event has the power to make a difference. Together, our community hopes to bring comfort, support and hope to those affected by cancer. Visit the link below to support those in need today. 💛

As part of National Reconciliation Week, students have placed Noongar language signs throughout the College, translating classroom and building names to help reflect and celebrate the culture and language of the traditional custodians of the land on which we learn and grow.
These signs will remain displayed through to the end of Week 10 as we continue our journey into NAIDOC Week, contributing to ongoing conversations, learning and recognition across our community.
This initiative is one of many ways our College is embracing this year’s National Reconciliation Week theme, All In, encouraging students and staff to engage in meaningful acts of reconciliation through listening, learning and respect. By recognising and valuing First Nations languages and cultures within our everyday spaces, we continue building understanding and stronger relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians.
From 27 May – 3 June, we acknowledge National Reconciliation Week, a time to listen, learn and walk forward together. Today, on National Sorry Day, we recognise the strength and resilience of the Stolen Generations and reflect on the injustices experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
This year’s theme, All In, reminds us that reconciliation is not simply a week in the calendar, but an ongoing commitment to building respectful relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians. At Mercedes College, we are committed to contributing to reconciliation through education, meaningful conversations and dedicated First Nations programs that encourage understanding, truth-telling and connection.
In this video, our First Nations students share the importance of National Reconciliation Week and why learning the histories, cultures and stories of First Nations peoples matters. Reconciliation is not about erasing the past, but acknowledging it, learning from it and working together to bridge the gap toward a stronger, more compassionate and just Australia.
Guided by our Mercy values of compassion and justice, we continue striving to be a College for every girl, a community where every voice is valued, respected and heard.

At Mercedes College we are committed to educating women to know of the influence they can have in the world beyond Mercedes. In Year 9 Business Management, this is explored through developing entrepreneurial thinking and questioning how businesses operate in the real world.
With our CBD location, students have easy access to a broad range of businesses, allowing them to observe these ideas in action. Last week, students visited Dome and The Coffee Club to compare their approaches. They took note of how each business presents itself, from layout and branding to the way they engage with customers, and considered how marketing strategies play out in practice.
Experiences like this help students connect what they learn in the classroom with what they see around them every day, building a clearer understanding of how businesses work.
