Be honest, have you ever looked at a cosmetic training course and wondered how something that complex could possibly be covered in two days?
You’re not wrong to question it. Ahpra’s updated guidelines from June 2025 to finally put Australia’s cosmetic nursing training under the spotlight. Anatomy, patient assessment, psychological screening, supervised practical, complication management, and formal competency sign-off are the minimum expectations. And not every course meets that benchmark.
Recently, APAN brought together a panel of leading industry voices to ask the harder question: what does the industry need to do to make sure regulation actually raises the bar, fairly and uniformly, across the board? AACDS was proud to contribute to that conversation representing what rigorous, accredited training looks like in practice.
We’ve written about what this means for practitioners, patients, and the future of the sector. It’s worth a read, whether you’re considering cosmetic training, already practising, or just following where the industry is heading.

What’s your take? Is the industry doing enough to close the training gap?

Ready or not - our industry is changing ‼️
As dermal therapy gains stronger recognition and regulatory expectations become more defined, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: passion and experience alone are no longer enough.
Today’s dermal therapists are working in a more complex clinical environment, with higher expectations around qualifications, scope of practice, client safety, treatment planning, documentation and professional accountability.
That means education can no longer be treated as optional, outdated or purely theoretical. It must prepare practitioners for the real responsibilities that come with advanced skin and aesthetic practice.
For those already working in the field, this is a moment to ask an uncomfortable but necessary question:
Are we building a workforce that is truly skilled, safe and compliant, or simply assuming competence because the industry has grown quickly?
In this latest article, Australasian Academy of Cosmetic Dermal Science - RTO 51373 explores how education is shaping the next era of dermal therapy, and why higher standards are essential for the future of aesthetic practice in Australia.
