A few years ago, we had the privilege of collaborating with local Perth First Nations artist Brian Blatchford on artwork for CTAS Education. 🎨

Brian's piece symbolises the links of learning between educators and children, the circles represent our meeting places and education services, and the handprints show children and educators learning together, side by side.

It's a piece we're proud to have in our space, and a reminder of our ongoing commitment to reconciliation.

MYTH VS FACT: STUDENT EDUCATORS & STAFFING

It’s important to remember that student educators should not simply be viewed as an extra set of hands or a replacement for experienced or qualified educators.

Student placements are an opportunity for supported participation, learning and professional development.

For services, this means creating an environment where student educators can:

• Develop their skills through meaningful experiences
• Receive appropriate guidance and supervision
• Ask questions and seek support
• Receive constructive feedback
• Build confidence in their professional practice

And importantly, services must continue to meet the applicable educator-to-child ratio, qualification and supervision requirements.

The goal isn't simply to get a student through their placement.

It's to help develop the confident, capable educators our sector needs. 💙

5 Tips for Supporting Student Educators When They Feel Overwhelmed

Working in early childhood education and care can be incredibly rewarding but we also know it can be full on, physically demanding and emotionally overwhelming, particularly for someone who is just starting out.

For a student educator, a difficult day can quickly turn into thoughts of:

“Maybe I'm not cut out for this.”
“I'm not good enough.”
“I don't know what I'm doing.”
“I can't keep up.”

This is where the educators, mentors and teams around them can make such a difference.

Small things can have a big impact:

• Check in and genuinely listen
• Break overwhelming tasks into manageable steps
• Remind them that they're still learning
• Recognise their progress and small wins
• Make it safe for them to ask for help

Supporting a student educator isn't about lowering expectations. It's about giving them the support they need to meet them.

We were proud to sponsor and be part of the .aca Member Forum last week! 💙

It was a fantastic day of connection, conversation and collaboration, bringing together approved providers, owners, directors and leaders from across WA’s early childhood education and care industry.

We loved the focus on the serious work of play, a great reminder of the important role play has in supporting children’s learning, wellbeing, movement and development. 🧩

For CTAS Education, staying connected to the sector we support is so important. Events like this allow us to listen, learn, share knowledge and connect with the incredible people working across early childhood every day.

A big thank you to Australian Childcare Alliance WA for creating such a valuable opportunity for everyone to come together.

Teaching Patience: A Skill Every Student Educator Needs 🌱

Patience isn't something every student educator automatically has, it's a professional skill that develops with experience, guidance and reflection.

For educators working with children, patience is essential when learning new routines, navigating challenging moments or supporting children who need extra time.

So, how can we help student educators develop it?

• Model it. Show patience in your own interactions with children, families and colleagues.

• Explain the “why”. Help student educators understand why some situations require slowing down, waiting and giving children time.

• Give them time to learn. Mistakes, questions and uncertainty are all part of becoming a confident educator.

• Encourage reflection. Ask questions like, “What happened?”, “How did you respond?” and “What might you try differently next time?”

• Celebrate progress. Building confidence takes time, and recognising small improvements can make a big difference.

Most importantly, remember that student educators are learning too. 💙

The same patience we expect them to show children is often the patience they need from us as mentors and supervising educators.

Meet Eldrene, our wonderful Administration Officer at CTAS Education! 💙

As one of the first friendly faces (and voices!) you’ll connect with at CTAS, Eldrene is always ready to help, answer your questions and point you in the right direction.

But Eldrene knows CTAS from more than just an administrative perspective. She completed both her Certificate III and Diploma through CTAS and has many years of experience working in Early Childhood Education and Care.

That firsthand experience means Eldrene understands our students, our industry and the journey of becoming an educator.

We’re incredibly lucky to have her as part of the CTAS team! ✨

Student educators are still learning. They shouldn't be expected to get everything right the first time.

The way feedback is delivered matters.

Instead of simply saying:

"That's not how we do it."

Try:

✔ Explain what you observed – "I noticed that..."

✔ Explain why it matters – "This is important because..."

✔ Ask for their perspective – "How did you feel that interaction went?"

✔ Offer guidance – "Next time, you could try..."

✔ Encourage reflection – "What do you think you might do differently?"

✔ Recognise what went well – "You did a great job of..."

This approach turns feedback into a conversation, rather than a correction.

It helps student educators understand not only what they could do differently, but why, giving them the knowledge and confidence to apply that learning in future situations.

And importantly, feedback shouldn't only happen when something needs improving.

Recognising progress, strengths and good practice is just as important.

When student educators feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes, receive feedback and try again, they're given the opportunity to develop into confident and capable educators.

The goal of feedback isn't to tell someone they got it wrong. It's to help them understand how they can grow.
