Today the Minister for Fisheries announced a range of strong measures to increase the sustainability of our WA demersal fish stocks.

Although these measures will have significant impacts for many people, they reflect a pressing need to recover WA’s iconic demersal species and are in line with the best science available.

𝗨𝗪𝗔 𝗢𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 and UWA School of Biological Sciences researchers have been working with 𝗪𝗔 𝗙𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 to investigate ways to find a balance between fishing and protection. They have published a new study demonstrating that setting aside areas from fishing in no-take zones combined with other appropriate fisheries management approaches could provide part of the solution.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗘𝘅𝗺𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗚𝘂𝗹𝗳 🌊 In May last year, DBCA teamed up with The University of Western Australia researchers to deploy 325 baited underwater cameras (BRUVs) across Exmouth Gulf to capture video footage as part of a major survey to assist the marine park planning process. Despite some tricky conditions and bad visibility, the survey recorded 15,871 fish from 312 species across coral reefs, filter feeders and seaweed (macroalgae) habitats. 𝗠𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘆 + 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 = ✅ 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲! This valuable data and encouraging footage will be used to guide marine park planning and provide baseline data for an ongoing fish monitoring program for the Gulf. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗮 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 to identify Important Shark and Ray Areas (ISRAs) to assist in their conservation given that more than a third of sharks across the world are now threatened with extinction. The world’s longest marine heat wave upended ocean life across the Pacific The multi-year heat wave nicknamed ‘The Blob’ impacted thousands of kilometres of marine ecosystems from Alaska to Baja California.

The Australian Marine Sciences Association WA branch has organised a special screening and live stream Q&A of Mammung, a documentary exploring indigenous knowledge about climate change adaption and sea level rise.

Mammung is the Noongar name for the whale. 🐳 🌊
