Itâs especially easy for children to get caught up in the excitement and anticipation of presents during Christmas time. Itâs easy for us adults to do the same. It is, after all, a season of joy, gifts and giving. While we may be able to see past the commercialisation and materialism of Christmas, we need to consciously help our children do the same. Hereâs how.
1. Explore its true meaning
Christmas, at its core, is about giving, not gifts. Take time to talk about the birth of Jesus and Godâs greatest gift to us: God becoming human, bearing the consequences of our wrongdoing and rescuing us from eternal separation from Him.
2. Create traditions beyond presents
Children often remember experiences more than things. Baking together, going camping, singing carols or driving around to see Christmas lights can create lasting memories and give children something meaningful to look forward to beyond whatâs under the tree.
3. Limit the wish list
This will encourage your children to think intentionally about what they truly value. It also helps to teach contentment.
4. Involve them in giving
One of the most powerful ways to shift the focus from âgettingâ to âgivingâ is to let children be part of it. This could be helping to choose a gift for a sibling, being part of a charity drive such as Operation Christmas Child or giving to ADRA. Involving children also helps to cultivate in them compassion, empathy and emotional intelligence.
5. Acts of kindness
Christmas is the perfect time to model kindness to your children. Together, leave thank-you notes for delivery drivers, help out at a soup kitchen or pick flowers for a neighbour.
6. Practise gratitude
Help your children see the thought and care that goes behind each presentâespecially the ones they may not appreciateâand why they should be thankful for it. Even better, guide your children to pause and think of something theyâre thankful for from the past year. Often, it will be a memory or an experience that extends beyond material stuff.
7. Keep it simple
The holidays donât need to be extravagant to be meaningful. Sometimes the pressure to create a âperfectâ Christmas adds more stress than joy. Children notice our attitude more than the number of presents under the tree.
8. Slow down
Holidays can be overstimulating. Show your children the value of slowing down by setting aside moments where they can pause, reflect and reset.
9. Focus on presence
The fondest memories our children will have are of the times spent together. Make sure to pause from the Christmas rush to spend time with them.
10. Celebrate people
Christmas gatherings are the perfect time to highlight that relationships matter. Emphasise that the celebration is about who youâre with more than what you receive because relationships bring the deepest fulfilment.

We are calling for Church members and friends to volunteer to take part in an urgent Christmas DIGGING BEE. The action will take place as soon as we have volunteers available to do it. The digging is required on the church compound - a hand-dug trench that sits about 60cm deep which will run from the church's front electrical meter box back towards the rear of the building, to an end point just outside the elders / pastor's room. The purpose of the trench is to carry new electrical cabling to a new electrical meter, which will be installed by electricians. But they can't install it unless and until the trench is dug for the cabling to be run, that connects the main meter box to the extension secondary meter. The digging process shouldn't take 2 or 3 persons more than a few hours, since the soil is mostly sandy over a distance of about 40 metres total. If you're available and able to help in this urgent endeavour, please send a message via Facebook messenger or make a phone call or post a message to volunteer via our official website. Or you can just post your name in the comments below. Thanks and Merry Christmas. âșïž

Sabbath School Lesson - One more week to go studying the book of Joshua.
The wars and conquest ended, Joshua had withdrawn to the peaceful retirement of his home at Timnath-serah. âAnd it came to pass, a long time after that the Lord had given rest unto Israel from all their enemies round about, that Joshua ... called for all Israel, and for their elders, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers.â
Some years had passed since the people had settled in their possessions, and already could be seen cropping out the same evils that had heretofore brought judgments upon Israel. As Joshua felt the infirmities of age stealing upon him, and realized that his work must soon close, he was filled with anxiety for the future of his people. It was with more than a fatherâs interest that he addressed them, as they gathered once more about their aged chief. âYe have seen,â he said, âall that the Lord your God hath done unto all these nations because of you; for the Lord your God is He that hath fought for you.â
