🌟 Congratulations to Outstanding Intern Award nominee Stephanie De Luca!

During her McCusker Centre for Citizenship internship with the Neurofibromatosis Association of Western Australia, Stephanie helped lay the foundation for a new initiative aimed at reducing stigma experienced by children and young people living with neurofibromatosis.

Her supervisor, Lisa Chambers, said:
“Stephanie’s contribution has had a significant and lasting impact on both the organisation and the NF community it serves. Her work laid the foundation for an education and outreach program that will directly benefit children, families and schools across Western Australia.”

Outstanding Intern Award nominee: Keighlee Burkhardt 👏

Congratulations to Keighlee Burkhardt, UWA Bachelor of Arts student and McCusker Centre for Citizenship intern, on being nominated for the 2026 Outstanding Intern Award for her internship with the WA Centre for Rural Health in Geraldton.

During her placement, Keighlee contributed to an international research project exploring rural health workforce challenges in Western Australia and Scotland.

“Keighlee showed initiative beyond what we expected, both in the tasks we gave her and in how she extended the ideas into better solutions.” — Kathryn Fitzgerald, WA Centre for Rural Health

Keighlee's contribution was also recognised with the WA Centre for Rural Health – Rural Health West Student Research Award, reflecting the impact of her work supporting research into healthcare challenges facing rural and remote communities.

Ananya is volunteering with Melville Cares as part of The McCusker Centre for Citizenship at UWA, where she helps with outings, Friendship Dinner Club events and ideas for activities.

“What I love most about it is getting to chat with clients and hear their stories,” says Ananya. “It's given me a completely different appreciation for how much a simple outing or dinner can mean to someone. It's also taught me a lot about planning things properly.”

Ananya’s placement has been very grounding for her. “It's easy to get caught up in assignments and forget why any of it matters,” she adds. “Being here reminds me.”

As part of National Youth Volunteer Week, we’re continuing to celebrate the wonderful young people like Ananya who bring their time, energy and fresh ideas to our community. Thank you all for supporting our Melville Cares community with kindness, care and enthusiasm.

How do we tackle complex social challenges that don't have simple solutions?

Each year, students in Approaches to Wicked Problems work alongside community organisations, government agencies and industry partners to explore some of Western Australia's most pressing social issues. Through research, collaboration and innovation, students develop practical, implementation-ready responses to real community challenges.

As our project partners have shared, students consistently bring fresh ideas, thoughtful analysis and genuine commitment to creating positive social impact.

Students develop skills in teamwork, inclusive communication, deep listening, self-awareness, research and leadership, while working on a challenge that matters.

Outstanding Intern Award nominee: Vipul Waghmode

Master of Business Analytics student Vipul Waghmode is one of the nominees for our 2026 Outstanding Intern Award for his internship with ASeTTS .

As a Project Intern - CIVAL Evaluation, Vipul supported a major impact evaluation, designing the project approach, analysing data, and delivering valuable insights to support future program development.
