The starting point for each Kumon student is determined individually in order to match the material to the current ability of the child. The worksheets have been designed in a way that allows students to figure out how to solve problems on their own. "Did you know the English alphabet has just 26 letters, but spoken English uses around 44 different sounds?
That’s because letters don’t always make just one sound. A single letter can sound different depending on the word, and sometimes letters work together to create entirely new sounds. For example, the same vowel can sound different in cat, cake, and father, while letter pairs like sh, ch, and th create sounds of their own.
This is why learning to read isn’t just about memorising letters, it’s about understanding how sounds work together. When children build strong phonics skills, they’re better able to decode new words, improve spelling, and read with confidence."
