As part of their science studies, some of our Year 10 and Year 11 students today joined an astronomical webinar with a special guest speaker. 2026 Australian of the Year, Katherine Bennell-Pegg, made history as the first Australian to qualify as an astronaut under Australia’s space program. She has been speaking to students around Australia about science, space and the connection to careers.

Students swapped textbooks for headsets at today’s virtual reality lunchtime session. Thanks to MindFlight7, a group of our students got hands-on with cutting-edge VR experiences that were as educational as they were exciting.
From stepping into the operating theatre during a simulated open-heart surgery to floating among the stars as astronauts, these immersive STEM-focused activities brought learning to life in a whole new way.
It was a fun break from routine and proof that innovation and education go hand in hand.

It was great to see Matthew, Simon, Thiyren and Kelvin, who were back on campus today. Having studied with us in recent years, the group shared stories from their time here and reminisced about the “old” days. It's not unusual for our international students to maintain the friendships forged at Canning College long after they've finished their studies with us. Originally from Hong Kong and Singapore, they’re now pursuing paths in social work, business, animal science and health science. Since 1982, we’ve loved supporting students from around the world, and moments like this make it extra special. Thanks for stopping by. You’re always welcome back!

Some of our Year 10 and Intensive English Program students recently had the opportunity to explore the Western Australian Museum Boola Bardip. It's always a great outing, especially for those international students who may not yet know as much about state’s history and culture.
From engaging interactive exhibits to fascinating insights into WA’s diverse communities and natural wonders, the visit was an enjoyable experience that we hope helped spark curiosity in our students.

As part of our commitment to achieving positive outcomes, Canning College provides additional one-on-one teaching to help students tackle topics they find particularly challenging. During lunchtimes and after school, students can attend the Learning Centre and speak directly with teachers. A timetable is posted in the library indicating to students when they can get help with particular subjects from Accounting to Psychology and all in between. Motivated students are more likely to take advantage of Learning Centre opportunities, giving them more chance of improving their grades.

Living in safe, secure and comfortable accommodation is an important part of student life, which is why we’re excited about a new purpose-built facility opening soon. The Yugo Perth University Campus, which is just across the road from Canning College, will open in July, offering students a range of accommodation options from Semester 2. The new facility increases the options close to Canning College, which include UniLodge accommodation at Vickery House and across the Curtin University campus.

Yesterday, Yugo Assistant Residence Manager Ashleigh gave our students a rundown on what to expect from the new accommodation, and to invite them to an open house on Sunday, May 24. Current students interested in exploring their housing options are encouraged to register for the event via the Yugo website.

The new Yugo accommodation is the first of two significant new builds next to Canning College with construction of a $200 million science facility at Curtin University due for completion next year.

These new projects put Canning College at the centre of a growing hub for learning, living and student life.

Congratulations to Tandin, Shri, Rock and Anika, who are new members of the Student Leader group for 2026. They join Alec, Bang, Jedisha, Mia, Nabil and Freya, who have continued in the roles they held last year. The newly appointed leaders delivered campaign speeches, promoting their personal leadership qualities, before confirmation of their inclusion in the leadership group. All leaders provide feedback to College management on student issues and assist staff in preparing for extra curricular activities, which helps in the development of student leadership attributes. We look forward to helping students grow and develop as they support continued improvements in on-campus activites that enhance the overall student experience.

Year 10 students kicked off the morning with a fun, friendly self‑defence session. The focus was on confidence building, staying active, and communicating clearly in different situations.
Lots of movement, plenty of laughs, and some useful skills along the way! Have a great weekend, everyone!
