One Talk at a Time

At Kids College, creating a safe, supportive and empowering environment for children is at the heart of everything we do.

We believe important conversations about body safety, feelings, boundaries and trusted adults should begin early in age-appropriate, gentle and supportive ways. The Australian Government’s “One Talk at a Time” campaign reminds us that protecting children starts with open communication and everyday conversations.

Recently, we explored resources and activities from the “One Talk at a Time” activity booklet, which encourages adults to use everyday moments like gardening, play, cooking, drawing and storytelling to help children feel safe talking about their emotions, worries and personal safety.

At Kids College, we support children by:
- Building trusting relationships with educators
- Encouraging children to use their voice and express emotions
- Teaching respectful interactions and personal boundaries
- Helping children identify trusted adults and safe spaces
- Using play-based learning and meaningful conversations to build confidence and emotional wellbeing

Sometimes the most powerful conversations happen during simple everyday moments, while painting, reading a story, planting in the garden or sharing lunch together.

By having “one talk at a time”, we can help children feel heard, respected, protected and confident to speak up when something does not feel right.

To celebrate Mother’s Day, our Wanderers enjoyed a very special muffin making experience at Kids College Childcare Centre.

The children were so excited to take part in mixing, pouring, scooping and decorating as they carefully worked together to create delicious muffins for the special people in their lives. There were lots of smiles, concentration and proud moments throughout the experience as the children explored each step of the baking process.

Cooking experiences like this provide so many valuable learning opportunities for young children. The children were developing their fine motor skills through stirring and pouring, early mathematical concepts through measuring ingredients, language skills through conversations with educators and peers, and confidence as they independently participated in the activity.

Most importantly, this experience gave the children an opportunity to express love, kindness and appreciation for their mums, grandmothers and special family members in a meaningful and thoughtful way.

At Kids College, we love creating hands-on experiences that combine learning, creativity and connection. It was beautiful to see our Wanderers so engaged and proud of the special treats they made to celebrate Mother’s Day.

There is something so special about watching babies completely immerse themselves in simple experiences.

Recently, at Kids College, our little learners have been deeply engaged in scooping and pouring activities using bowls, cups, ladles, water, and rolled oats. What may look like simple play to adults is actually big learning happening right before our eyes.

The introduction of rolled oats added a whole new level of curiosity and challenge. The babies carefully explored how the oats moved, how full they could fill their ladles, and what happened when they poured too fast or too slowly. Some children worked with quiet concentration, while others excitedly repeated the process over and over as they discovered new ways to explore the materials.

These moments help build important fine motor strength, coordination, control, and early problem-solving skills. More importantly, they encourage children to slow down, focus, experiment, and gain confidence in their own abilities through independent exploration.

At Kids College, we value creating calm, meaningful learning experiences where children are free to investigate, explore textures, make discoveries, and learn at their own pace. Sometimes the simplest activities create the richest learning opportunities.

At Kids College, our babies have been busy exploring the beautiful colours and textures of Autumn through a hands on nature art experience.

Using natural materials such as gum nuts and gum leaves, the children enjoyed dipping them into paint and stamping them onto paper to create unique patterns and artwork. The babies were fascinated by the different shapes, textures, and marks each natural item made, turning a simple art activity into a rich sensory learning experience.

Activities like this support so many important areas of early development. As the children grasped the gumnuts and carefully stamped the leaves, they were strengthening their hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, and concentration. The sensory aspect of feeling the smooth leaves, rough gumnuts, cool paint, and watching the colours blend together encouraged curiosity, creativity, and exploration through play.

At Kids College, we love incorporating natural elements into our learning experiences, allowing children to connect with the environment while engaging in meaningful, play-based learning. It was wonderful to see our babies so engaged, focused, and proud of the beautiful Autumn patterns they created.

Learning through play, creativity, and sensory exploration is always at the heart of what we do.

Our wanderers recently enjoyed a beautiful musical experience as they engaged in the “I Can Sing a Rainbow” song while waving colourful scarves through the air.

There were so many smiles, giggles and curious little faces as the babies watched the bright scarves move and dance along with the music. Activities like this may look simple, but they provide so many important learning opportunities for young children.

Through music and movement, babies are developing their listening and language skills as they begin to recognise rhythm, repetition and familiar words. Waving the scarves also supports fine and gross motor development, hand-eye coordination and body awareness as they learn to move their bodies in different ways.

The colourful scarves encouraged visual tracking, sensory exploration and early colour recognition, while the group experience helped build social connections and confidence in participating alongside their peers and educators.

At Kids College Childcare Centre, we believe some of the most meaningful learning happens through joyful, play-based experiences that engage children’s senses and spark their curiosity. It was wonderful to see our babies so engaged, relaxed and excited during this special activity.

Hygiene, Cleanliness & Children’s Safety Are Our Priority!

At Kids College, maintaining a clean, hygienic and safe environment for children is something we take extremely seriously every single day.

A childcare environment should feel warm, welcoming and homely, but it should also meet the highest standards of cleanliness and infection control to help protect our children, families and educators.

Behind the scenes, there is a huge amount of work that goes into keeping our centre clean, sanitised and well maintained.

- Our educators complete thorough day-to-day cleaning routines throughout the day and again at the end of each day
- High-touch areas, bathrooms, tables, sleep spaces and learning environments are regularly sanitised
- Toys, resources and play equipment are cleaned and rotated regularly
- Bedding, cots and eating areas are maintained with strict hygiene practices
- We encourage and teach healthy hygiene habits with children including handwashing, safe food handling and cleanliness routines

To maintain an even higher standard, we also have professional external cleaners attend the centre twice every week after hours to complete deeper cleaning and sanitising throughout the service.

But it does not stop there.

Every few weeks, our family personally comes into the centre on weekends to carry out additional deep cleaning, organise resources, clean toys, refresh learning spaces and focus on all the little details that can often go unnoticed during busy childcare days. From shelves and storage areas to outdoor resources and hard-to-reach corners, we believe every space children use matters.

As a small family-owned childcare centre, we genuinely care about creating an environment where children can safely learn, play and grow. We know families trust us with the most important people in their lives, and we never take that responsibility lightly.

Clean environments are not only about appearance. They help support children’s health, wellbeing, comfort and sense of security.

Thank you to our amazing educators and cleaning team who work so hard behind the scenes every day to help keep Kids College safe, clean and welcoming for everyone.

Food Allergy Week, 24–30 May

At Kids College, the health and wellbeing of our children is always a top priority. Food Allergy Week is an important reminder for families and educators to work together in creating safe environments for all children, especially those living with food allergies.

Did you know that introducing common allergy-causing foods such as eggs, peanuts, cow’s milk and wheat at the right time may help reduce the risk of developing allergies in babies? Early introduction, when developmentally appropriate, is now encouraged by health experts.

The “Nip Allergies in the Bub” initiative shares helpful guidance, simple food ideas and recipes to support families during this important stage of their baby’s development.

For more information and recipes, visit: bit.ly/4cGObZO

At Kids College, we take allergy management seriously by:
- Following strict food safety and hygiene procedures
- Supporting children with individual allergy and anaphylaxis plans
- Promoting safe food handling practices
- Educating children about healthy and safe eating habits in age-appropriate ways
- Working closely with families to ensure every child feels safe and included

If your baby already has a diagnosed food allergy, do not introduce that food without medical advice. Please speak with your GP or allergy specialist for guidance.

Together, through awareness, education and teamwork, we can help keep all children safe while building positive lifelong relationships with food.

At Kids College Childcare Centre, child safety is at the heart of everything we do.

Recently, our children explored what “feeling safe” means to them through drawings, conversations and creative expression. Seeing child safety from the children’s perspective was both powerful and beautiful.

Some children shared that they feel safe because their teachers look after them, help them when they need support, and make them feel loved and happy. Others spoke about feeling safe while playing outdoors with friends, enjoying cuddles from educators, and knowing there is always someone there to care for them.

These meaningful reflections remind us that child safety is so much more than policies and procedures. It is about creating an environment where children feel secure, respected, heard and valued every single day.

At Kids College, we are committed to building trusting relationships with children through warm interactions, consistent routines, emotional support and positive guidance. We want every child to know that their voice matters, their feelings are important, and that they belong.

Activities like this also support children’s emotional wellbeing, communication skills, confidence, sense of identity and ability to express their thoughts and feelings in meaningful ways.

Thank you to our wonderful team for creating safe spaces where children can thrive, and to our amazing children for sharing their thoughts so openly with us.

Recently, our educators at Kids College organised a fun face painting experience for the children, and the excitement across the centre was absolutely beautiful to see!

From butterflies and superheroes to colourful rainbows, flowers and animal designs, the children loved choosing what they wanted to become and eagerly waited for their turn with huge smiles on their faces. The joy, laughter and excitement shared throughout the day created such a happy and vibrant atmosphere across our learning spaces.

Face painting is not only a fun experience for children, but it also supports many important areas of learning and development. Through imaginative play, children are encouraged to express their creativity, individuality and confidence as they transform into different characters and engage in pretend play with their peers.

The experience also supported social development as children interacted with one another, shared ideas, complimented each other’s designs and practised patience while waiting for their turn. For some children, it was also a wonderful opportunity to build trust and confidence as they sat calmly with educators during the painting process.

Our educators used the experience as a chance to engage children in conversations about colours, shapes, emotions and imaginative storytelling, extending their language and communication skills in a playful and meaningful way.

At Kids College, we believe learning should be joyful, engaging and filled with opportunities for children to express themselves. Seeing the children’s proud smiles as they admired their painted faces and excitedly showed their friends was such a special reminder of how meaningful simple experiences can be in early childhood.

At Kids College, some of the sweetest learning moments come from the simplest games.

Our babies share lots of giggles and smiles as they playe peekaboo together while standing at the rails. Taking turns hiding and revealing their little faces, they are full of excitement, laughter and joy as they interacted with one another.

Peekaboo may look like a simple game, but it plays an important role in early childhood development. Through this playful interaction, babies begin developing their understanding of object permanence, learning that people and objects still exist even when they cannot be seen. This is an important cognitive milestone in the early years.

Games like peekaboo also help strengthen social and emotional development as babies learn to connect with others, respond to facial expressions, anticipate reactions and build trusting relationships with educators and peers. Their shared laughter and eye contact support communication skills, confidence and a growing sense of belonging within their environment.

As they stand, balance and move around the rails, babies are also developing their physical strength, coordination and stability, helping to build important gross motor skills and confidence in their movements.

At Kids College, we believe learning happens naturally through play, connection and meaningful interactions. Watching our babies engage with one another, share joyful moments and learn through simple everyday experiences is always so special for our educators.
