Amazing 2 day workshop learning to code with Arduino. This group quickly progressed from copying codes to creating their own Arduino instructions - we had robot cars writing out words, doing wheelies, dancing, playing soccer…there was no stopping this group!

At Cedar Park, we offer group tutoring and mentoring designed to support both the educational and social needs of homeschoolers. I started these groups because my own daughter missed the regular connection with friends. As a former classroom teacher with over 20 years of experience and a homeschooling parent for nearly seven years, I wanted to create a space where young people could learn together in a supportive, friendly environment.

We now run groups across three locations: Banjup, Cockburn Central and Greenwood for learners from 10 to 18 years old. Families can choose flexible attendance options, from one hour up to four days per week.

Alongside core subject tutoring, we offer a range of enrichment activities, including art, outdoor education, engineering skills, photography, interactive book club, tabletop games, and Totally Board Dungeons & Dragons sessions. We also host workshops and regularly welcome a visiting university lecturer to inspire curiosity and broaden horizons.

For those who prefer learning mainly at home, our FlexiLearn program offers a tailored curriculum with the option for in-person mentoring support.

Now in our fifth year (and our third as Cedar Park), nearly all our learners return each term. We keep groups capped to maintain a warm, respectful atmosphere where everyone is valued.

Here’s what some of our parents have shared:
“You have helped build (...)’s confidence and self-worth up again. As a parent, these things mean more to me than I can truly express.”

“Our daughter has been so happy since starting at Cedar Park. We feel like we have our girl back again! She’s regained her love of learning and curiosity in this supportive environment.”

“(...) told me she no longer feels the Sunday blues because she’s excited to go to Cedar Park the next day. That simple change means so much.”

“The tutors are dedicated and supportive and have made a massive difference to my son's educational journey.”

“Three days a week is perfect for us right now. Can't believe she hasn’t refused to go even one day!”

We’ve recently expanded with a new location, the hub, for our older homeschoolers, providing them with pathways to TAFE, uni and the workforce. We currently have homeschoolers doing university units and TAFE certificates. If you’re looking for a caring community where your homeschooler can learn and grow with others, we’d love to welcome your family.

A note on who joins us:
Our groups are for families seeking both academic support and real social connection. It works best for young people who are ready to engage respectfully with mentors and peers in a shared learning space.

Our requirements are that homeschoolers are respectful and supportive of each other, able to work independently and in groups at a high school level, and all homeschoolers want to learn with us.

Those who know me know that I am a horse lover and so it feels appropriate to share this piece written by a friend. So many of the points made are relatable to our kids and teens 🥰

🏇 The Race That Stops a Nation – A Call to Pause and Reflect

The first Tuesday in November, Australia will stop and watch the Melbourne Cup - in tea rooms, boardrooms, racecourses, pubs, and luncheons venues.

I urge everyone to take a few moments to read this🫶.

Read it aloud.

Share it with your colleagues, your friends, your guests.

Let it be a moment to honour the horses that make this day possible, and to reflect on what their lives can teach us about our own.

Because beyond the race, the glamour, and the noise - there’s wisdom, heart, and truth in every Thoroughbred’s story❤.

Rules of Life, According to Thoroughbreds

➡️Rule 1: Genetics matter - but not that much.

Some are bred to sprint, others to stay the distance.
But pedigree only sets the odds - it doesn’t decide the outcome.
You might be genetically blessed for speed or struggle, but in the end, it’s the other stuff that wins races.

➡️Rule 2: Genetics come second to your mother.

In racing, broodmare calmness, maternal instinct, and temperament matter more than bloodlines.
In life, it’s the same - a good mother, or anyone who loves and grounds you, sets the stage for you to thrive.
Recognise those people. Honour and be grateful for them, and when it’s your turn, be that grounding presence for someone else.

➡️Rule 3: Education makes or breaks you.

A horse’s potential can be nurtured or wrecked by the hands that train it.
Same with people. Good guidance builds confidence; bad guidance builds therapy bills.
We’re all teachers - so teach with care and thought, and set others up to discover that their capabilities and worth already live inside them.

➡️Rule 4: Run your own race.

The best Thoroughbreds don’t look sideways; they have a rare trait for horses - independence from the herd.
They can operate with less impact from others and their environment. They can keep their focus without distraction.
We are no different. A sense of security in who you are - the ability to focus, to know what to give a damn about, and when to let go - is the greatest thing you can learn.

➡️Rule 5: Life is bloody hard - and that’s normal.

No horse comes off the track without scars, and neither do we.
Resilience isn’t pretending it doesn’t hurt - it’s knowing when to push, when to rest, and when to let go.
Eat well, sleep well, move your body - and don’t let hardship turn you into a victim.
People think horses are scared creatures - the truth is, they’re the fastest learners, and that makes them the bravest, toughest, and kindest animals on the planet.

➡️Rule 6: People will misjudge you - forgive them anyway.

Off-the-track Thoroughbreds get called hot and difficult.
They’re not - they just need retraining from a professional role that’s very different from what’s required at pony club.
Everyone’s unlearning something and doing their best at learning something new - and sometimes that’s hard.
Respect that, and you’ll start seeing greatness where others see trouble.

➡️Rule 7: Value isn’t price - it’s what you’ve learned.

A million-dollar yearling will most likely end up a $500 retiree.
What rarely protects a horse is the money or races it won.
What does protect a horse - or a human - is education, adaptability, and health.
Worth isn’t what you cost; it’s what you carry.

➡️Rule 8: Your environment matters.

No one becomes healthy or capable alone.
Horses heal when they get the basics right - good food, good care, good company, exercise, and time.
Their gut settles, their body rebuilds, and their mind follows.
We’re the same.
We heal from the inside out - through what we eat, how we rest, who we spend time with, and how we move.
Surround yourself with people who look after themselves, balance you, and remind you that you matter.
And leave others better than you found them.

So here’s to the Thoroughbreds - and to us.
Born with potential on paper, then shaped - for better or worse — by what we go through and who we have beside us.
Mislabeled, misunderstood, magnificent.
We run, we fall, we heal, we grow -
and if we’re wise, we do it beside people who steady us, challenge us, remind us who we are, and bring out our best.

Final Note:
This piece began as my wedding speech - written to honour my husband and our guests with the lessons horses have taught me about life, love, and resilience. Please share it widely, not just on Melbourne Cup day, but anytime it might inspire reflection.
I only ask that you don’t copy or republish it without permission.

Cedar Park is growing and we are looking for tutors to join our team.

Cedar Park is a homeschool hub where homeschoolers can make connections and learn amongst peers and friends.

We offer tutoring and mentoring plus a wide range of enrichment options, including art, tabletop games, debating, outdoor education, theatre arts and more. We also offer our groups excursions, camps, movie nights etc.

Our priorities are that everyone is respectful and everyone enjoys learning with us. We have the most beautiful groups to work with. At the moment, our age range is from 9 years up to 17 years, with a variety of learning needs, including profoundly gifted homeschoolers. Four of our current homeschoolers have completed or are doing university subjects. Every homeschooler needs to feel safe and able to achieve to their potential without a feeling of comparison or high expectations.

Our ideal tutors would be teachers with experience in the homeschool world, who are passionate about their subject area and helping homeschoolers enjoy learning. Open to differences and promoting respect is high on the priority list, as well as professionalism, reliability and the ability to help everyone to feel successful at their pace and level.

Please email info.cedarpark@gmail with your CV (it doesn’t need to be formal) and outline what you can offer.
