The Planning Institute of Australia Urban Design Related Awards Showcase features the best of the annual planning awards. The winners have just 10 minutes to present their project, followed by questions from the audience. Join us for this fast-paced and entertaining session.

Regal Subiaco - City of Subiaco, together with Westbridge Funds Management, Space Collective Architects, Planning Solutions, and the Regal Theatre Foundation.

Part 2 - Launch of 'Requiem for the ‘Australian Dream” - Sergio Famiano

UDF is proud to join in the launch of 'Requiem for the ‘Australian Dream’’ by leading local planner and author Sergio Famiano. Planners are being blamed for the housing affordability crisis but are often left out of the public discussion. Hear from a planner who has taken the time to document the broader issues and explain the planner's role in the solutions.

Sergio Famiano is the author of ‘The New Australian Dream – Rethinking our homes and cities to solve the housing crisis’, published in 2022. The book examines the origins of the Australian Dream of home ownership, Australia’s love affair with the house and block with a car and the ‘growing shadows’ that have emerged with suburban living and its transformation of Australian cities from the 1950’s onwards. In his latest book – ‘Requiem for the Australian Dream’, Sergio examines the birth of the ‘Australian Dream’ of home ownership under Menzies, to its death in the 2000s. Requiem for the ‘Australian Dream’ examines the historical elements and varied government policies and pure greed that turned the Australian Dream of home ownership into a nightmare. The book takes a proactive dive into the roots of the crisis, and offers feasible solutions going forward to ensure affordable home ownership can again become a right for future generations of Australians.

Successful Wrap-Up of the Urban Design Forum Pecha Kucha Series 2024

Perth’s leading urban designers came together for the final Urban Design Forum WA event of the year. The forum featured the Planning Institute of Australia (WA)’s 2024 urban design award winners, alongside a stimulating discussion about the recently unveiled Perth Foreshore Masterplan revitalisation.

The PIA award presentations were inspiring thanks to:

Andrew Howe
Tom Griffiths
Nicholas Temov

Maddie Ford

Julian Bolleter's Perth Foreshore Masterplan presentation was an insightful exploration of the historical interventions and highlighted the complex political, climate, and site constraints shaping its future.

Francesco Maria Mancini stimulated imagination with the foreshore design work being delivered through his program by Perth Urban Research Lab.

There was broad support for a strong River Front vision but some significant questions around appropriate scope, funding and delivery.

The evening wrapped up with lively conversations as we reconnected with colleagues and reflected on priorities for 2025 and beyond.

A big thank you to our partners at the design Institutes, and thank you to the lead representatives for turning up in person.

Vicki Lummer RPIA (Fellow)
Planning Institute of Australia

Jon Everett
AILA WA - Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA)

Jonathan Speer
Australian Institute of Architects

And to Hames Sharley for providing such a fantastic venue and support for the event!

Thank you - See you next year.

Hey Community!

The Urban Design Forum WA is back for the year. Our design community's passion for good design that reflects local character and creates vibrant and liveable communities has led us to this fora series.

The UDFWA's Design Principles series is focused on Design WA's 10 design principles and how these are being applied to different types and scales of projects.

Our next forum will look at how design of major infrastructure in precincts addresses the Amenity principle, and what this means for places and communities.

Join us on the 21st of February at 5pm WST for this COVID friendly (online) forum and share in this important conversation.

Register to attend at https://lnkd.in/gqq4_kEe

See you online 😊
