Mistakes are not the thing to avoid, they are the thing that builds the skill.
When a young person wobbles, drops it, or gets it wrong, that is not always a cue to step in and fix it. It is often the exact moment they are learning. A little grit now, embracing the challenge and growing from the mess ups, is what lets them take on harder things later with a shrug rather than a meltdown.
Let them struggle a little, and then cheer loudly for the effort. If you want the grown-up version of this, psychologist Dr Emily Musgrove unpacks grit on The Imperfects. Her point that grit is grown through effort, not handed out as talent, is exactly what is happening when we let a child wobble, and wobble, and go again. Have a listen, link in the comments.
