Some beautiful memories to share from our first class and opening night (last night) in Canning Vale 🥹

Thank you to everyone who came along lastnight, especially to those who have never done 'ura in their life. We hope you enjoyed yourselves as much as we did, sharing our sacred cultural dance - 'ura and a tiny speck of our island home the Cook Islands 🇨🇰 with you all.

We are so greatful. 🥹

Our journey until this point has been so humbling, and we are also grateful to everyone who has contributed to our learning (believe it or not, we may have known how to 'ura before walking, but teaching 'ura is a whole ball game - but it has been extremely rewarding).. and growth over the last 6 months 🙏🏽

Welcome to day 2 of our 'Cook Islands Māori Word of the Day' - 'Ura Edition series💃 celebrating epetoma o te reo Māori Kuki Airani 🇨🇰

Today’s word is 'ĪMENE' - Sing/Singing 🎶

Many of our stories have been passed down through songs by our ancestors. If our reo is the anchor of our culture, īmene is the wind that gives it flight.

In our space, music isn't just background noise. Music dictates every step we take and everything we feel in the moment. All the music we play is specifically chosen due to the way we feel about it and the meaning behind it. Our classes rely completely on the songs we play. A 'ura class without music simply wouldn't exist for us.

Apologies for the late post!

Still Monday where we are, so we’re right on island time! As promised, this post kicks off our 'Cook Islands Word of the Day' series ‘Ura Edition, celebrating Cook Islands Māori Language Week!

We thought that it was only fitting that our very first word to highlight is 'ura. While we are linguistically diverse, 'ura remains a universal term recognised across all our islands and global Cook Islands communities. Depending on the island - particularly in the northern group - you will hear us pronounce 'ura a little differently, but the root remains the same.

Historically, before 'ura became the standard term for dance, it has been noted that our ancestors used kapa. Today, that history lives on in specific traditional dances such as 'kapa rima' (and others). The term 'ura also connects us deeply to our Pacific cousins, sharing its roots with the Tahitian word 'hura' and Hawaiian 'hula'. We felt it was important to share that depth. While 'ura is widely recognised across our diaspora today, it beautifully coexists with our other terms, both past and present, prominent and obscure.

In our classes, you will at times hear me say "hupa" or "hupahupa". This is mostly out of habit, as that is how we say dance in my dominant Cook Islands Māori dialect.

If you were to ask me to define 'ura, I would tell you it is many beautiful things - a powerful, yet soft art form of self-expression. There are many layers to this word, but to me, 'ura is a sacred expression of who we are.
