Smart Plant Improvement

Smart Plant Improvement Smart Plant Improvement is an Industry-funded research team developing innovative pre-breeding technologies in grain & pasture legume species & food crops.

We are an Industry-funded team of nine. Our research is funded from a range of sources – predominantly The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), but also Cooperative Research Centre (CRC), CRC-P, consultancies with Go8 Universities and private companies/ biotech start-ups. Our projects cover a range of species including grain and pasture legume species, functional food crops such as

Chia and Quinoa and oilseeds including canola and camelina. We are interested in developing innovative pre-breeding technologies to create, characterise and capture genetically advantageous traits. We are open to collaboration and industry linkages. For further information or to discuss student project opportunities, please contact us ([email protected])

Faster flowering can result in significant savings and better profitability for plant breeders. Various conditions can affect the flowering speed, but the quality of the light spectrum is probably the most important. It is well known that the ratio of red:far red (R:FR) color from the light source,…
