Big corporations should always think twice before kicking sand in the face of the wee guy… especially if the wee guy owns a guitar and a grudge.
Take Dave Carroll. Lovely bloke. Musician. Proud owner of a very expensive Taylor guitar—which, thanks to the tender loving care of United Airlines baggage handlers, came out the other end looking like it had been used to fend off a shark.
So Dave does the polite thing. He complains. He explains. He waits. And what does he get in return? Cold indifference. The sort of response that says, “Yes sir, we understand your pain… now move on.”
Now here’s where corporations underestimate musicians and the power of social media. Because musicians don’t write angry letters. They don’t smash printers. Oh no.They write songs.
So Dave does exactly that. He writes a song about it. Records it. Makes a music video. Sticks it on YouTube and goes, “Right then, let’s see how this plays out.”
BOOM. Viral.
Suddenly the whole world knows United Airlines treats guitars like chew toys. The bad publicity spreads like a rash and next thing you know their stock allegedly drops by 10%. Ten percent! That’s about $180 million dollars—all because one bloke had a tune and a camera.
And the cherry on top? Taylor Guitars step in and give Dave two brand-new guitars. Two!Which is basically the universe saying, “Well played, son.”
So remember, if you’re a massive corporation thinking of mucking about with the little guy—check first if he’s a songwriter.
Because revenge… with a melody… travels very fast.
Good on ya, Dave. 🎸😄
