How I turned Andreas's 90% to 99.80% ATAR—it's 100% possible!
I first met Andreas at the end of Year 11 in 2021. At that time, he was averaging around 90% in methods and 80% in chemistry, physics, and specialist.
His friend, Roman Green, was already my student, and his results had shot up. Roman was topping his school in numerous tests and exams, and Andreas wanted the same results.
Andreas's father, a professor of medicine, inspired him to pursue a medical degree. However, Andreas lacked good study systems, particularly for the sciences. He was reactive, only revising before assessments.
Over the 2021 Christmas holidays, I taught Andreas Year 12 methods, chemistry, physics, and specialist. I showed him how to study effectively and prepare properly.
When he started Year 12, his results had already improved. Just before his WACE exams at the end of Year 12, his predicted ATAR was 99.6. Andreas probably had the best WACE exam performance I've seen in my ten years of teaching and ended up with an ATAR of 99.80, matching his friend Roman Green.
Andreas got accepted into UWA medicine and is currently a second-year medical student there. I expect great things from Andreas. Good teaching and a supportive family environment have guaranteed his success.
Reflecting on Andreas's journey, I see the power of proper guidance and a structured study approach. His story reinforces my belief in the unique teaching strategies I've developed over the years.

Your child's med school checklist: three must-do's for success
Because, parents, this is the only way.
I've spent over a decade helping students get into medical school. It's not just about grades; it's about strategy, resilience, and the right mindset. Many students rely on multiple tutors and still struggle. My goal is to make sure students are competent, can think critically, and solve problems effectively.
Here's the roadmap I give to my students:
1. Start early and stay consistent. Medical school aspirants need to build a strong academic foundation. Focus on science subjects and maintain high grades from the get-go. Consistent effort over time trumps last-minute cramming.
2. Seek out quality mentorship. Work with experienced tutors who can guide you through the nuances of the application process. They should help you develop critical thinking skills, not just rote memorisation.
3. Balance academics with extracurriculars. Medical schools look for well-rounded individuals. Engage in extracurricular activities like volunteering, research, or part-time work in healthcare settings. These experiences show the student's commitment to the field and help them stand out.
To get into top medical schools, start early, seek quality mentorship, and balance your academics with meaningful extracurriculars. It's a challenging path, but with the right strategy, you can succeed.

From South Africa to Australia: an immigrant tutor's reflection on how true change is made through education
When my family moved from South Africa to Australia, I faced the challenge of integrating into a new culture. We left South Africa to avoid the harsh realities of compulsory national service, but starting anew in Australia presented its own set of difficulties.
At Kwinana Senior High School, I noticed a stark social divide. Despite Australia's stance on sanctions against South Africa's apartheid, the hypocrisy hit me hard. I befriended the only Aboriginal student in the school, who had no other friends. This experience opened my eyes to the inconsistencies in societal values.
Understanding the hypocrisy in society became a personal mission. I couldn't comprehend the segregation I had left behind in South Africa, only to witness a different form of it in Australia. It taught me the importance of thinking independently and standing up for what's right, regardless of societal norms.
I realised that true integration goes beyond blending in. It's about challenging the status quo and fostering genuine connections. This insight guided my approach to teaching and mentoring. I wanted to help students not just succeed academically but also think critically and empathise with others' experiences.
I made sure to help my students understand others' perspectives and think for themselves. I encouraged them to ask questions and see things from different points of view to create a classroom where everyone feels included.
The way I've dealt with blending into different cultures and dealing with hypocrisy really influenced how I teach. I'm really into assisting students, especially those from different backgrounds, and helping them get through their academic paths with more confidence.
I found that bringing up societal issues in my lessons really got the students thinking more about the world around them. It wasn't only about getting good grades; it was about realising the society they're part of and how they can help improve it.
Reflecting on my journey, I see the value in embracing cultural differences and addressing societal hypocrisies head-on. It's not an easy path, but it's necessary for genuine progress.
I encourage you to think about the societal norms you encounter and how you can challenge them for a more inclusive future.

Tutoring is more than just teaching facts. In fact, it's the opposite.
It's about building mental resilience, offering emotional guidance, and helping students overcome their personal challenges alongside their academic ones.
