This might be uncomfortable to hear, but maybe that's exactly why it needs to be said.

We've created systems that reward children for sitting still, staying quiet, following directions, and learning in one very specific way.

Then we act surprised when children who are curious, energetic, creative, sensitive, neurodivergent, traumatised, anxious, hands-on, or simply different begin to struggle.

The question shouldn't be, "What's wrong with the child?"

The question should be, "Why does this environment only work for some children and not others?"

Children were never designed to be identical. Learning was never meant to look the same for everyone.

A child's worth should never be measured by how easy they are to manage.

Just a thought. 💭

One of the biggest predictors of reading success isn't intelligence.

It's confidence.

Children who are willing to have a go, make mistakes, self-correct and keep trying will almost always make more progress than children who are too worried about getting it wrong.

Confidence doesn't magically appear one day. It's built over time through encouragement, positive experiences, achievable challenges, and having trusted adults who focus on progress rather than perfection.

That's why you'll often see us sitting alongside children, celebrating effort, supporting them through mistakes, and creating opportunities where they can experience success.

Our job isn't to create perfect readers.

It's to create confident learners.

The reading comes after that. ❤️

🥔 WEEK 6 • Everyday Cooking Skills 🥔
Tuesday 2nd June

This week we’re making Mini Potato Pancakes 😋

These sessions are about so much more than just cooking. Every recipe creates opportunities for children to build confidence, independence, communication skills, and practical life skills in a calm and supportive environment.

This week children will have opportunities to:
✨ practise grating and mixing ingredients
✨ strengthen fine motor skills
✨ follow multi-step instructions
✨ explore new foods and food textures
✨ develop confidence in food preparation
✨ engage in teamwork and conversation

I’ve also loved seeing children become more willing to try new foods as their confidence grows each week. Sometimes being involved in the preparation process makes all the difference 👌🩷

🧠 IQ gets a lot of attention.
Emotional intelligence deserves more.

You can have an IQ through the roof, but if you can't recognise your emotions, manage frustration, navigate relationships, cope with setbacks, communicate your needs, or reflect on your own behaviour... life can still be incredibly difficult.

At ALA, we're just as interested in who children are becoming as we are in what they know.

Yesterday's Essential Skills session wasn't just about tunnels, painting, scissors and letter activities.

It was about waiting when something didn't happen immediately.
Trying again when something felt hard.
Working alongside others.
Managing disappointment.
Building self awareness.
Developing confidence.
Learning that mistakes aren't emergencies.

Because what good is knowing all the answers if you don't have the skills to participate meaningfully in the world around you?

The ability to regulate, connect, adapt and persevere will take a child much further than any test score ever could. ❤️

Every Thursday
🩷 One to one coaching also available

People often look at activities like this and think, “Oh they’re just playing with bugs.” 🐜

But developmentally? There is SO much happening here.

Using tweezers strengthens the small muscles in the hands and fingers (fine motor development), while also building grip strength, finger isolation, wrist stability and hand eye coordination.

It also supports:
• motor planning
• visual tracking
• concentration and sustained attention
• spatial awareness
• precision and control
• patience and persistence
• problem solving

Educationally, activities like this are also laying foundations for early maths and science skills without children even realising it. They’re sorting, categorising, counting, observing differences, using positional language, predicting, organising and building attention to detail.

And the best part?
The child feels like they’re just playing. No pressure. No performance anxiety. Just genuine engagement and curiosity.

Kids learn best when they can touch, move, explore and interact with what they’re learning. Honestly… if learning feels boring, the brain switches off pretty quickly 🙃

Learning doesn’t always have to be loud to be powerful… but it also doesn’t always have to happen sitting at a desk filling out worksheets either 😉✨

Sometimes the best learning starts with imagination, creativity and giving kids the space to just explore ideas 💛🌈

25/05/2026

Worksheets don’t have to be boring 😉🍓

The magic is in how they’re used.
Today we turned a simple worksheet into a hands on learning experience with stickers, counting, matching and problem solving; keeping little minds engaged while building early maths confidence ✨

Because when learning feels fun, kids are far more likely to connect with it 💡

Quick mental maths activities might look simple, but consistent daily practice plays a huge role in building strong mathematical foundations ✨

Activities like these help to:
🩷 strengthen number fluency
🩷 improve cognitive recall speed
🩷 build confidence and automaticity
🩷 support working memory
🩷 cement mathematical concepts through repetition and retrieval practice

When children no longer have to use all of their mental energy figuring out basic facts, it frees up cognitive space for deeper problem solving and higher level mathematical thinking 👌

At Authentic Learning Australia, we focus on making learning intentional, achievable, and confidence-building, one small step at a time 🩷

🍫 WEEK 5 • Everyday Cooking Skills 🍫
Tuesday 26th May
Reserve Drive, Mandurah

This week we’re making Chocolate Nut Bark 😋

This recipe is such a great opportunity for children to practise independence and creativity in the kitchen. From choosing toppings to mixing and assembling ingredients, there are so many natural learning opportunities woven throughout the session.

This week children will have opportunities to:
✨ practise measuring and pouring
✨ strengthen fine motor skills
✨ follow multi-step instructions
✨ explore food textures and combinations
✨ build confidence and independence

I’ve really been loving watching friendships grow during these sessions too. Some of the best moments happen naturally around the table through conversation, teamwork, and shared experiences 🩷

And let’s be honest… it’s also a pretty nice little treat, and we all know I do love a little bit of choccie 🍫😉
