People often look at activities like this and think, “Oh they’re just playing with bugs.” 🐜
But developmentally? There is SO much happening here.
Using tweezers strengthens the small muscles in the hands and fingers (fine motor development), while also building grip strength, finger isolation, wrist stability and hand eye coordination.
It also supports:
• motor planning
• visual tracking
• concentration and sustained attention
• spatial awareness
• precision and control
• patience and persistence
• problem solving
Educationally, activities like this are also laying foundations for early maths and science skills without children even realising it. They’re sorting, categorising, counting, observing differences, using positional language, predicting, organising and building attention to detail.
And the best part?
The child feels like they’re just playing. No pressure. No performance anxiety. Just genuine engagement and curiosity.
Kids learn best when they can touch, move, explore and interact with what they’re learning. Honestly… if learning feels boring, the brain switches off pretty quickly 🙃

Learning doesn’t always have to be loud to be powerful… but it also doesn’t always have to happen sitting at a desk filling out worksheets either 😉✨
Sometimes the best learning starts with imagination, creativity and giving kids the space to just explore ideas 💛🌈

Worksheets don’t have to be boring 😉🍓
The magic is in how they’re used.
Today we turned a simple worksheet into a hands on learning experience with stickers, counting, matching and problem solving; keeping little minds engaged while building early maths confidence ✨
Because when learning feels fun, kids are far more likely to connect with it 💡

Quick mental maths activities might look simple, but consistent daily practice plays a huge role in building strong mathematical foundations ✨
Activities like these help to:
🩷 strengthen number fluency
🩷 improve cognitive recall speed
🩷 build confidence and automaticity
🩷 support working memory
🩷 cement mathematical concepts through repetition and retrieval practice
When children no longer have to use all of their mental energy figuring out basic facts, it frees up cognitive space for deeper problem solving and higher level mathematical thinking 👌
At Authentic Learning Australia, we focus on making learning intentional, achievable, and confidence-building, one small step at a time 🩷

🍫 WEEK 5 • Everyday Cooking Skills 🍫
Tuesday 26th May
Reserve Drive, Mandurah
This week we’re making Chocolate Nut Bark 😋
This recipe is such a great opportunity for children to practise independence and creativity in the kitchen. From choosing toppings to mixing and assembling ingredients, there are so many natural learning opportunities woven throughout the session.
This week children will have opportunities to:
✨ practise measuring and pouring
✨ strengthen fine motor skills
✨ follow multi-step instructions
✨ explore food textures and combinations
✨ build confidence and independence
I’ve really been loving watching friendships grow during these sessions too. Some of the best moments happen naturally around the table through conversation, teamwork, and shared experiences 🩷
And let’s be honest… it’s also a pretty nice little treat, and we all know I do love a little bit of choccie 🍫😉

Hammer + nails + excited kids = the BEST kind of learning 😍🔨
There was cheering.
There was concentration.
There was the occasional bent nail 😂
But most importantly… there was PRIDE.
These legends worked so hard creating their string art hearts today and absolutely smashed it 💪
Honestly, learning sticks differently when kids are engaged, creating, moving, trying, problem solving and having fun.
You should have seen their faces every time they successfully hammered a nail in 🥹❤️
Safe to say this activity was a huge hit.

Honestly… if learning isn’t interesting, engaging or relevant, most kids are going to switch off. And let’s be real...adults would too. 😅
This session looked like play on the surface, but underneath it was building phonics, communication, problem solving, confidence and critical thinking skills all at once. 🚗🧠✨
Children learn best when they’re curious, connected and actually enjoying the experience.
Learning shouldn’t feel like pressure all the time… it should spark something. 💛
22/05/2026
Some children don’t need stricter systems, more pressure, more worksheets, or another adult telling them to “try harder.”
They need to feel safe and to feel seen.
They need someone to look past the behaviour, the shutdowns, the frustration, the “lack of motivation”… and actually ask why.
I think a lot of children are carrying the weight of expectations that were never developmentally appropriate for them in the first place.
And in all honestly, that breaks my heart.
Because when children are given the right environment… when learning feels safe, meaningful, hands on, connected and human… they change.
Not because we “fixed” them.
But because they finally had space to become who they already were underneath the pressure.
That is what Authentic Learning Australia is built on.
Not perfection.
Not performance.
Connection, trust, regulation, confidence, curiosity and genuine relationships.
I will never stop advocating for children to be taught as humans first.

Sometimes learning looks quiet ✨
Activities like mindfulness stacking stones may look simple from the outside, but there is actually so much foundational development happening underneath the surface.
Through experiences like this, children are developing:
🩷 concentration and sustained attention
🩷 patience and persistence
🩷 fine motor control and hand eye coordination
🩷 visual perception and spatial awareness
🩷 problem solving and critical thinking
🩷 emotional regulation and mindfulness
These types of open ended, hands-on experiences also support children to slow down, focus on the process, and work through frustration in a safe and supportive way.
In a world that often expects children to rush, perform, and constantly produce written work, there is so much value in giving them opportunities to simply breathe, focus, create, and connect 👌
At Authentic Learning Australia, we intentionally incorporate activities that support the whole child, not just academics 🩷

🌮 WEEK 4 • Everyday Cooking Skills 🌮
Tuesday 19th May
12:30-2:30
Reserve Drive, Mandurah
This week we’re making Taco Boats 😋
There’s something I really love about watching children build confidence around food preparation. Some jump straight in, others take their time watching first, and both are completely okay here 🩷
This week children will have opportunities to:
✨ prepare and assemble ingredients
✨ practise safe utensil use
✨ follow multi-step instructions
✨ build independence and confidence in the kitchen
✨ engage in social interaction and teamwork
What has been really lovely to see is children naturally joining in when they feel comfortable and ready. Alongside the cooking experiences, we also have games, toys, creative projects, and social play available, allowing children to engage in a way that feels safe and enjoyable for them.
It’s all about creating a calm, supportive environment where confidence can grow naturally 👌

Big numbers, paint brushes and hands on learning 🎨
This week we were painting giant numbers while talking about what they look like, how they’re formed and where we’ve seen them before.
What looks like a simple painting activity is actually supporting so many important foundational skills
• number recognition
• correct number formation
• pincer grip and hand strength
• fine motor control
• visual processing
• coordination and body awareness
• memory and recall
• connecting learning to positive, safe and engaging experiences
For many children, learning through movement, play and creativity helps concepts stick far more effectively than sitting down with a worksheet straight away.
When learning feels safe, enjoyable and pressure free, children are far more likely to engage, take risks and build confidence in their abilities ✨
Plus… painting giant numbers is way more exciting than tiny ones on a worksheet 😍
