This week in the Sprout Scouts garden with Nutmegz, we celebrated Djilba, one of the six Noongar seasons by making our own eco cleaning spray.

Djilba is a time of transition, when the cold and rainy days begin to mix with warmer weather. During this season, the landscape comes alive with beautiful colours, including soft shades of pink.

The children discovered that many useful plants were growing right in our own Sprout Scouts garden. We used a combination of native plants, including Geraldton wax, native rosemary, native thyme and river mint. We also added peppermint and lavender from the garden, along with vinegar and a beautiful blend of essential oils. A small amount of açaí berry powder was added to give our spray a gentle pink tint, representing the beautiful colours of Djilba.

The children enthusiastically crushed, mushed, mixed and stirred the ingredients together. Once everything had infused, we carefully sieved the mixture and poured our natural eco-cleaning spray into recycled glass jars.

The children then added beautiful labels to each jar, making them look extra special.

This experience showed the children that our garden is so much more than a place to grow food and flowers. It can also provide natural and sustainable alternatives for everyday products.

Celebrating Educator Appreciation Day

On Wednesday, we celebrated Educator Appreciation Day, a special occasion recognised across the nation to acknowledge and appreciate the incredible educators who play such an important role in the education and care of our children.

To our amazing team, thank you for everything you do. Thank you for the care you provide, the meaningful connections you build, the special moments you create and the positive difference you make in the lives of children each and every day.

Our educators play a vital role in creating safe, nurturing and engaging environments where children can learn, grow, and thrive. Your dedication, passion and commitment to supporting children's learning and development do not go unnoticed.

Thank you for being the heart of our service.
We are incredibly grateful for everything you do and proud to celebrate the outstanding work of our educators today and every day. πŸ’™πŸŒŸ

Staff meetings are a vital part of bringing our team together to reflect on our practice, strengthen our knowledge and continue providing the highest quality care and education for children and families.

At our August staff meeting, we kicked things off with a fun and engaging Quality Area Bingo activity led by our Educational Leader, Alison. Teams explored the many ways we implement Quality Area One: Educational Program and Practice across our service, sharing examples of the wonderful work happening in each room.

Our ELC team then unpacked and reflected on the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations, discussing how these are embedded in our daily practice and identifying additional ways we can ensure children's voices are heard and reflected in our decision-making and continuous improvement processes.

The team also participated in a service-wide scavenger hunt, locating key documents and resources from around the centre and bringing them back for discussion. Together, we reviewed how and why these important resources are used to support quality practice, compliance and positive outcomes for children.

We finished the evening by collaborating and planning for our upcoming special events, with plenty of exciting ideas and opportunities ahead.

We are doing a food collection drive for the Spiers Centre with the closet location being in Duncraig. They have sent an appeal out for assistance in collecting pantry items for individuals and families in need. We will have a collection box in the main OSHC room until the 9th September 2026. The collection will be for non-perishable pantry items. It will be amazing to help them and our community. Please refer to the attached poster for more information. Any queries let us know.

What an amazing Pupil Free Day we had at OSHC on Friday!
Our Loose Parts Day was packed with creativity, from box construction and cubby building competitions, to turning recycled materials into unique works of art. The children showed fantastic imagination and collaboration, and we loved seeing all their creations come to life.
