STAR GAZING ⚫️🟡🔴

One of our talented year 6 students has been given the task of creating something that would help the community as apart of her school project, she is very passionate about learning and embracing the Aboriginal culture and wanting more people to learn the culture and it’s history too. Dedicating her time at school and home to research and create a website that other children and families can sign up to and learn about Aboriginal culture. With information about learning about their language, hunting, medicines, tool making and much more!

Yesterday she demonstrated how to access and use the website to her friends and showing them how to navigate the website to go through a learning journey.

We are incredibly proud of what she has created and think it is such a wonderful idea to acknowledge our counties First Nation people, their history and culture.

Please find the link to her website to create a account and explore all her hard work and show her support 🤗

Week Two of Vacation Care • 13/04 - 17/04 🌼

Day 1 - We went and saw Lauren and Rachel from WA wildlife in Bibra Lake. The lovely ladies showed us around their ‘permanent residents’ area where the children got to meet a range of wildlife. The children were especially excited when we got to meet and pat the dingos! The lovely Oliver then showed us around the veterinary hospital. 🐨

Day 2 - Mosaic Art day was amazing! The children spent the day making Mosaic coaster’s with small colourful tiles. We also made bookmarks and mandala coasters with sparkly sticky beads.✨

Day 3 - On day 3 we had Emergency Services Day. We got to hear from and meet Police officers, Paramedics, Firefighters and the SES. The children enjoyed asking questions and scoping out their vehicles. 🚨

Day 4 - For minute to win it the children got split into 4 groups and challenged eachother in multiple different games!🏆

Day 5 - On the last day of Vacation care we headed out to the Swan Valley Cuddly Animal Farm. The children fed Marshmallow the gorgeous cow, roamed around the paddocks with the sheep, alpacas, goats and llamas and cuddled the guinea pigs. 🐮

EMERGENCY SERVICES DAY🚑🚒🚓🦺👮👨‍🚒

This week at LiL MiKi’s we held an emergency services day at our Woodlupine centre. The day was planned after learning about natural disasters and educator Kat’s stories of being a volunteer fire fighter in her community. Due to the children’s interest educator Kat thought it would be a fantastic idea to hold an emergency services day and invite some of the different emergency services in our area.

First up we met Helen, Chris, and Kelly from Kalamunda SES. They talked to the children about what the SES is and how they operate in emergency situations, from search and rescue, flooding, fallen trees, storm damage, cyclones and much more. Throughout their talk they explained their roles and the training involved as active volunteers. They showed the children some of the equipment used on jobs and also what they may need to use depending on the situation.

We then met paramedic Vicki from Mundaring St John Ambulance branch. Vicki showed the children some of the bags of equipment they would use to help a patient. She explained what the Ambulance service does and where you may see them helping in a variety of different emergencies. During her talk Vicki demonstrated how they check oxygen levels and blood pressure and showed the children some of the different types of oxygen masks and tools used to help people who are having trouble breathing or in need of CPR.

We then met Constable Mel and Cadet Officer Hudson from Forrestfield Police Station. They talked to the children about being a police officer and the variety of jobs and emergency responses involved. The children asked many questions about police work.

The final talk was from Vincent and Michael from Kalamunda Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade. They talked about how their brigade responds to bush fires in the local area and how they also go to other areas of Perth to help support bushfire brigades, as well as also being deployed to places like Dongara and Kununurra to help with bushfires.

After the talks we split up into two groups and headed outside to explore the emergency services vehicles. We explored the SES and had a look at even more tools and resources in their vehicle that they would use when out on jobs, certain types of rescues, or helping with storm damage, fallen trees etc.

The children got to see what an ambulance looks like from inside. Vicki showed the children the seat where the paramedic would sit. They had turns laying down on the bed and seeing what other resources were inside the ambulance.

At the police car the children took turns at sitting inside the vehicle and seeing what gadgets the police use while driving around on the job. They got to hear the police radio and sat in the cell part of the vehicle where someone who was in trouble would be taken to the police station. What really made the children’s day was getting to wear the hand cuffs. Officer Hudson handed out stickers and paper police hats and played games of tic tac toe and concentration with the children.

Exploring the big fire truck the children got to have a turn at using the hoses to spray water towards some pretend fire that they had to try and knock down. They climbed on the back of the truck and went inside the cab to see how they operate the sirens and turn the water on.

To wrap up our emergency services day the children stood near the vehicles with the emergency services personal for a big group photo. The children then all stood in a group and held up the ‘Thank You For Your Services’ poster we painted yesterday. We waved goodbye to our guests as they left flashing their emergency lights and sirens.

We had such a fun day and were very grateful for the emergency services personal for giving their time to come and visit and share the important roles they all play in keeping our community safe. It was a great learning experience for the children in getting to understand each of the emergency services teams. They may perform very different roles and tasks but they can also come together in emergencies and work as a team.
