Δεν συμφωνώ ιδιαίτερα με τις “παγκόσμιες ημέρες”, όπως η Ημέρα της Γυναίκας, γιατί συχνά προβάλλουν μια αφηρημένη ιδέα αντί για το συγκεκριμένο πρόσωπο. Όταν τιμάται απλώς μια έννοια, υπάρχει ο κίνδυνος να χαθεί η μοναδικότητα της ανθρώπινης προσωπικότητας. Αντίθετα, στις παραδοσιακές γιορτές τιμάται ένα συγκεκριμένο πρόσωπο, η ζωή και το έργο του, το οποίο προτείνεται ως πρότυπο μίμησης. Αυτή η λογική είναι πιο κοντά στην αριστοτελική έμφαση στο ήθος και την πράξη, όπως εξελίχθηκε μέσα στην ορθόδοξη παράδοση, και λιγότερο στην πλατωνική έμφαση στις αφηρημένες ιδέες.

Η Ελένη Γλύκατζη-Αρβελέρ (1926–2026): Μια Ζωή αφιερωμένη στο Βυζάντιο και τον Άνθρωπο

Σήμερα η Ελλάδα αποχαιρετά μια σπουδαία μορφή του πνεύματος: την Ελένη Γλύκατζη-Αρβελέρ. Μια γυναίκα που δεν υπήρξε απλώς ιστορικός του Βυζαντίου, αλλά ζωντανή γέφυρα ανάμεσα στην ελληνική παράδοση και τη διεθνή ακαδημαϊκή σκέψη.

Η πορεία της από την προσφυγική καταγωγή της Σμύρνης έως την κορυφή της γαλλικής πανεπιστημιακής ιεραρχίας — ως η πρώτη γυναίκα πρύτανης στην ιστορία της University of Paris (Sorbonne) — αποτελεί από μόνη της ένα κεφάλαιο ιστορίας. Όμως το έργο της ξεπερνά τους τίτλους και τις διακρίσεις· είναι μια πνευματική παρακαταθήκη.

Το Βυζάντιο ως ζωντανή κληρονομιά

Για την Αρβελέρ, το Βυζάντιο δεν ήταν μια «σκοτεινή» ή παρεξηγημένη εποχή. Ήταν ένας ζωντανός οργανισμός πολιτισμού, πολιτικής σκέψης και θεολογικής σύνθεσης.

Στο έργο της Η Πολιτική Ιδεολογία της Βυζαντινής Αυτοκρατορίας, ανέδειξε με σαφήνεια τον τρόπο με τον οποίο η αυτοκρατορική εξουσία συνδέθηκε με τη θεολογική αντίληψη της οικουμένης. Δεν έβλεπε το Βυζάντιο ως ανατολικό απολίθωμα της Ρώμης, αλλά ως δημιουργική συνέχεια του ελληνισμού μέσα σε χριστιανικό πλαίσιο.

Στο βιβλίο της Γιατί το Βυζάντιο, απαντούσε σε ένα βαθύτερο ερώτημα: γιατί επιμένουμε να μελετούμε αυτή την αυτοκρατορία; Η απάντησή της ήταν σχεδόν υπαρξιακή — γιατί μέσα από το Βυζάντιο κατανοούμε τον εαυτό μας, την ταυτότητα της Ευρώπης και τη σχέση Ανατολής και Δύσης.

Η Ελλάδα μέσα από το βλέμμα της

Η Αρβελέρ δεν υπήρξε μόνο ακαδημαϊκός του εξωτερικού. Παρέμεινε βαθιά Ελληνίδα, με λόγο δημόσιο και συχνά παρεμβατικό.

Στο έργο της Οι δρόμοι του μεταξιού, επανατοποθέτησε την ελληνική παρουσία μέσα στο παγκόσμιο εμπορικό και πολιτισμικό δίκτυο της Μεσογείου και της Ασίας. Έδειξε ότι ο ελληνισμός δεν υπήρξε ποτέ περιφερειακός, αλλά διαχρονικά κοσμοπολίτης.

Και στο στοχαστικό της βιβλίο Το Άγνωστο Βυζάντιο, κατέρριψε στερεότυπα και ανέδειξε την καθημερινότητα, την κοινωνική οργάνωση και τη δημιουργικότητα μιας εποχής που για πολλούς παρέμενε ακατανόητη.

Μια γυναίκα μπροστά από την εποχή της

Σε μια περίοδο όπου οι γυναίκες σπάνια καταλάμβαναν κορυφαίες ακαδημαϊκές θέσεις, η Αρβελέρ διεκδίκησε χώρο με το κύρος της γνώσης της. Η φωνή της ήταν σταθερή, καθαρή, χωρίς υπερβολές — αλλά γεμάτη αυτοπεποίθηση.

Δεν υπήρξε μόνο μελετήτρια της ιστορίας· υπήρξε η ίδια ιστορικό γεγονός. Το παράδειγμά της ενέπνευσε γενιές ερευνητών, ιδιαίτερα Ελληνίδες ακαδημαϊκούς που είδαν στο πρόσωπό της την απόδειξη ότι η αριστεία δεν έχει φύλο.

Η παρακαταθήκη

Η απώλειά της σήμερα αφήνει ένα κενό, αλλά και μια ευθύνη. Να συνεχίσουμε να διαβάζουμε, να ερευνούμε, να αμφισβητούμε. Να βλέπουμε την ιστορία όχι ως μουσειακό αντικείμενο, αλλά ως ζωντανή συνομιλία με το παρόν.

Η Ελένη Γλύκατζη-Αρβελέρ μάς δίδαξε ότι το Βυζάντιο δεν είναι απλώς παρελθόν· είναι τρόπος σκέψης. Και ίσως αυτό να είναι το μεγαλύτερο μάθημά της: πως η ιστορία δεν τελειώνει — μεταμορφώνεται.
