As routines ease and holiday fun begins for many of our young ones in the southern hemisphere, it's easy for sleep schedules to be pushed out and to drift - but still keeping consistency despite no school can make a big difference for a child's wellbeing.

As we head into the holiday season, many of us have the opportunity to have a good daytime nap, especially during those festive weeks when our routines are more relaxed and less scheduled.

Daytime napping in healthy adults can be an effective way to recharge when we've had a shorter night's sleep than usual. Effective napping can boost, energy, alertness, concentration and mood.

As cosy as a holiday nap can be however, it's important to be mindful of the right and wrong ways to nap, since napping at the wrong time can actually disrupt our nighttime sleep.

A great topic that we always like to come back to is this concept of Sleep Debt!

Although our sleep needs can shift with work, social life and everyday demands, cutting back on sleep can build a sleep debt that can be tough to recover from.

Sleep debt happens when there is a gap between the sleep our bodies NEED and the sleep we ACTUALLY get. Even small nightly losses can add up quickly, impacting our memory, reaction time and overall cognition.

While we can make up SOME lost sleep, we can never fully repay a large sleep debt, nor can it be saved in advance.

Let's make sure to be intentional about the debts we take on. Sleep shouldn't be one of them!

A common question often asked in clinical sleep studies is: "What do you measure during an overnight sleep study and what does each piece of equipment actually do?"

If you are scheduled for a sleep study, understanding the purpose of what we measure and why we measure it can often help patients feel informed and more confident and comfortable about what to expect.

Here we break down the key equipment we use during studies and what each one measures to assess for sleep disorders as well as to assess an individual's overall sleep quantity and quality.

With insomnia symptoms affecting around 30-35% of the population at any given time, it's important to recognise the significant short-term and long-term consequences that insomnia can pose on an individual.

Addressing insomnia and its associated symptoms is essential for preventing long- term consequences and promoting optimal sleep health. Remember better sleep means a more well rested and resilient you!
