As part of working towards their Worm Warriors badge, the children at Tall Tree Early Learning - Banksia Grove recently conducted a very important worm rescue.
Today, we explored an essential part of caring for living creatures — responsibility, empathy, and kindness — as we carefully rescued worms that had made their way into the bottom layer of our worm farm.
As part of our regularly embedded sustainability practices, the children worked together gently and respectfully, understanding that even tiny creatures like earthworms rely on us to keep them safe and healthy. Through this experience, the children are learning that owning pets — even worms — comes with the responsibility of caring for them completely.
Moments like these help children feel empowered and capable as they realise the huge impact their actions can have on the lives of small living things.
Through hands-on sustainability practices, the children are developing empathy, compassion, and a deeper connection to the natural world around them.

Our little learners at Bloom Early Education have been busy working towards their Carbon Collectors badge as part of the Patch Pioneers Garden Program by Nutmegz Education!
Children have been collecting and processing donated carbon materials—things like newspaper, egg cartons, and dried leaves—to keep our carbon bin stocked and ready. These materials are then used to mulch gardens, balance our worm farms, and support thriving ecosystems.
What starts as a simple activity soon becomes a fully embedded sustainable practice, helping children develop a hands-on understanding of how carbon plays a crucial role in protecting our planet.

And that’s a wrap on this year’s Nutmegz Eco Christmas Tree Competition 🎄✨
Like every year, we’ve received entries from across Australia and I have been blown away by the time, effort, creativity and commitment to sustainability.
I’m so proud of each and every one of the children who worked so hard to reuse waste, think carefully about our planet, and create such beautiful eco-friendly Christmas trees. You are all little sustainability superstars. 💚♻️
I’m very excited to announce the results:
🏆 Winner: Bloom Early Education Padbury
Below is their beautiful tree – please take a moment to scroll through and admire all the clever ways they’ve turned “rubbish” and nature into something truly magical. ✨
This whimsical eco Christmas tree has been lovingly created from reused Coles paper bags and dried, fallen bottlebrush flowers. The children carefully folded and layered each bag to build the tree shape, then sprinkled it with vibrant red bottlebrush to give it a magical, bush-Christmas feel. No glitter, no plastic – just everyday “waste” transformed into something beautiful, textural and wonderfully sustainable. ✨
Thank you to all the children, educators and families who entered this year. Your ideas and creativity are exactly what the world needs more of. 🌏💫
Bring on next year’s eco Christmas creations! 🎁🌿e
Thank you to our wonderful Sprout Scouts at SSP ELC & OSHC for this absolutely adorable tutorial!
