Fear may be present as birth approaches. Trust grows when you can notice it, understand it, and still remain connected to your body, your baby and your own choices.

You do not need to become fearless. You need support that helps you remember yourself.

What birth asks of you can be unimaginable before you have experienced it. Physically, mentally and emotionally,
it can bring you right to an edge you did not know existed. At times, it may feel as though your whole body is being pulled apart and pieced back together — while, at the very same time, you are bringing new life into the world.
It is immense. It is raw. And it is incredible what the body can do when it is given the space, support and trust to do what it was made to do.

Friday Research

This week I read an Australian study that analysed more than 1,200 submissions to the NSW Birth Trauma Inquiry.

Rather than examining medical outcomes, the researchers explored the experiences described by women and families to better understand the concerns being raised and identify where maternity care could continue to improve.

For me, this highlights something that reaches beyond clinical care: communication is part of care.

As a doula, I don't believe it's my role to tell a woman how she should feel about her birth. Her experience belongs to her.

What I can do is create a safe space where she can ask questions, understand what happened, and make sense of her own birth story in her own time.

I'd encourage anyone interested in maternity care to read the original paper.

What is informed consent? Have you experienced it, did you have the chance to think about your options and ask questions during labour?
Please share your thoughts 🙏

If you were wondering what I was doing recently. I did a workshop with the inspiring Ginny Phang-Davey from Optimal maternal positioning. I collected knowledge of how to support women better during pregnancy and birth.
I went camping with my kids and enjoyed some beautiful days at the Estuary Hideaway Holiday Park and of course we had school holidays.
In the quiet hours, I was also working on my next blog post about Cesarean section. It is shared next week when the kids are back to school. So stay tuned
