Guiding families and schools towards neuro-affirming education for neurodivergent kids.

Be very aware. Hyper aware. Of everything. All the time. You can’t shut it off. Colours, smells, sensations, vibes, noises. Dial it up to 1000. Aware of everything and how it all collides together.

Except time. No awareness of Time. Or personal space. Or vegetables in the crisper drawer. Or clothes in the washing machine.
There you go, now you’re getting it!

I can’t tell you how many people Freak Out at the concept of Low Demand, and truth be told, I was also in that camp for a very long time.

Because of the misconceptions of Low Demand. Because it sounds like Permissive Parenting/Care, which ISN’T good for kids.

I too said “Kids need boundaries to feel safe!” & I firmly believe that. They need to know there are limits and consequences of actions. But let me tell you, when you let go of pointless or negotiable expectations, kids are a lot more receptive to the important boundaries & have the capacity to care more about the consequences. When they’re allowed control, they don’t have to seek it so desperately.

At the end of the day, if you have a Safe Relationship with a child, you can ask them to do something, explain why, and they’ll do it because it’s the Right Thing To Do, not out of fear.

Dysregulation shuts down cognitive capacity, so it makes sense that increasing regulation will increase capacity for academic engagement & achievement.

In March this year almost 10,000 kids in WA were waiting to see a paediatrician and many of them will be waiting on that list for months.

So what can you do in the meantime, while you're waiting to see a specialist?

Dr Billy Garvey, a leading developmental paediatrician, has tried to answer that question for parents, grandparents and caregivers. Listen back to his conversation with Jo Trilling on ABC Radio Perth's Drive: https://bit.ly/3XXTTB5

Hello!

Stimmy Things has been borne out of the recognition that schools and families both want the same thing: what’s best for the kids! It’s just that often, they’re speaking a different language. Parents don’t know what they can ask for, what is available, or how hard to advocate. Schools often need more guidance on targeted, specific strategies for supporting ND students to thrive, but don’t know where to find it.

I’m an AuDHD adult, a parent of ND kids and a teacher, so you might say I’m fluently bilingual when it comes to understanding this journey.

My goal and role in Stimmy Things is to act as an interpreter, facilitator and educator to bring families and schools together towards their common goals: supporting the whole child.
