WA Education Awards 2026 🌟

We are incredibly proud to share that Melville Senior High School has been named one of four finalists in the Excellence in Teaching and Learning (Secondary) category of the 2026 WA Education Awards.

This recognition belongs to our whole Melville community – our students, staff, families and community partners, whose commitment, care and support contribute to our school every day.

At Melville SHS, we strive to create a school where every student feels they belong, is known, challenged and supported, and has the opportunity to find their pathway to success. Through quality teaching and rich learning opportunities, we want every young person to find their place at Melville and be ready and confident for whatever comes next.

To have this work recognised at a state level is a wonderful acknowledgement of what our school community continues to achieve together.

NAIDOC Assembly 2026 ⚫🟡🔴

Our school community came together for a meaningful NAIDOC Assembly celebrating this year's theme, 50 Years of Deadly. Following a Smoking Ceremony as students arrived, guest speaker Uncle Rueben Hayden-Nelson shared his reflections on what NAIDOC means to him and the true meaning of being "Deadly". We also heard insightful presentations from our ACE students, who reflected on the changes and progress made over the past 50 years and the positive impact these have had on their generation. The assembly concluded with powerful performances of the Wirin (Spirit) Dance and the Yonga and Weitj (Kangaroo and Emu) Dance before staff and special guests

Also showcased during the event was our community artwork project, originally spearheaded by our ACE students and brought to life with contributions from the wider school community before being completed by a local artist for the final touch-ups.

The celebrations continued with a NAIDOC morning tea, providing an opportunity for our community to come together, connect and reflect.

🌟 STUDENT SPOTLIGHT 🌟

Congratulations to Year 12 student Katelyn W., who won the People's Choice Award in the Snapshot WA Youth Photography Competition for her entry in the "My World" category.

Katelyn's photograph explores feelings of euphoria, bliss and wonder, with the aim of reflecting gender self-expression and personal beauty. Drawing inspiration from the HBO series Euphoria and the work of q***r makeup artists and photographers, she created a dreamlike, ethereal image. The charms featured on the model's face represent the many aspects of childhood joy.

Speaking about her work, Katelyn said her goal was to create an image that captured "feelings of euphoria, bliss and wonder" while celebrating self-expression and personal beauty.

Commissioner for Children and Young People Dr Jacqueline McGowan-Jones congratulated Katelyn on the achievement, sharing: "[Katelyn's] photograph was a clear favourite with the public ... It takes creativity and confidence to put your work forward, and I hope [she is] proud of this wonderful achievement."

Congratulations to Katelyn on this wonderful recognition. We are proud to see her creativity celebrated by audiences across Western Australia.

StepUp Series - Applications Open!

Experience the challenge of Gifted and Talented learning!

Designed for Year 5 students who demonstrate a capacity for extension, Melville SHS’s Gifted and Talented (G*T) StepUp Series is a free four-week program that introduces students to the challenge, creativity and collaborative learning that are central to our highly regarded G*T Program.

Through engaging, divergent-thinking challenges, students strengthen creative problem-solving, abstract thinking and the key skills that underpin the Department of Education’s Academic Selective Entrance Test, including reading comprehension, written communication, quantitative and abstract reasoning.

Working alongside like-minded peers in a supportive learning environment, students build confidence, communicate original ideas, and develop the resilience to tackle increasingly complex challenges.

Star-crossed lovers, dramatic twists, and plenty of laughs along the way! 🎭

Our Year 9 students were treated to a fantastic performance of Romeo and Juliet by Bell Shakespeare, bringing one of literature's most famous stories to life and creating a memorable learning experience for all involved. Students were actively engaged throughout the performance, with audience members invited to participate and even one of our English teachers stepping into the role of Prince Escalus for a scene on stage.

Through humour, energy, and plenty of audience interaction, Bell Shakespeare made Shakespeare's classic tragedy engaging, accessible, and unforgettable for our Year 9 students.

Congratulations to Melville SHS alumna Maya Louvel-Finn (Class of 2024), who is set to make her professional debut for the St Kilda Football Club AFLW tomorrow! 🌟🏉

A fantastic achievement and reward for years of hard work and dedication. Maya joins fellow Melville SHS alumnae, sisters Mim (Class of 2019) and Indi Strom (Class of 2022) of the Fremantle Dockers in the AFLW.

We wish Maya all the best for her debut and the season ahead, and encourage our community to tune in tomorrow and support her as she reaches this exciting milestone in her sporting journey.

Diving In With Diving WA 🏊

Our Year 12 Physical Education Studies students recently visited the Perth High Performance Centre (HPC) to bring their biomechanics investigation to life through diving.

Working with former Olympian and European Champion Tony Ally, now Head Coach and Program Manager at Diving WA, students explored biomechanical principles in a real-world setting. By comparing their skills before and after expert coaching, they were able to analyse movement, technique and performance in a far more engaging way than traditional classroom-based investigations.

Exploring Food Security Solutions 🌏🍽️

Our Year 9 HaSS students investigated solutions to food security, including alternative food sources such as insects. After learning about their nutritional benefits and lower environmental impact compared to traditional livestock, students considered whether they agreed with the statement:

"I believe that eating insects is a good solution to food insecurity and environmental issues."

They then had the opportunity to put their views to the test by sampling flavoured crickets and mealworms.

The activity encouraged students to explore how innovation and changing food systems may help address future challenges.
