The Truth About Children - That Most Parents Forget

Here's something that might surprise you:
All children want to be good.

They want to be happy, loved, SEEN AND HEARD, BUT… what you may not have realised is that they also want to be capable, clever and helpful.
Children love living in a family where everyone happily gets along and helps each other.

We’ve been lied to!
We’ve been convinced if children say ‘I don’t feel like it,’ then they shouldn’t have to do, learn or even try anything! This is absolute madness!

Kids without parents who push them a little can get into a habit of not trying when anything in life is a little harder than they like.

Kids under 5 in particular, just say the first thing that comes to mind or what works to be disagreeable

What they don't want is to be bossy, whiny or the spoiled one in the family? NO THEY REALLY DON'T!

They crave your leadership because they want to learn FROM YOU.
Children feel safest when Mum and Dad are calm, confident, and consistently kind and helpful leaders.

Not controlling. Not harsh. Just Fair, Firm & Fun.

As parents, it's our job to guide, teach, and support our children as they grow.
And when children trust your leadership, something wonderful happens:

Less conflict.
More cooperation.
More connection.

When I decided to be a leader, not a pleader…

I was walking home from the beach recently when I saw something that made me stop and think- this used to be me.

A little boy was sitting in the hole his dad dug for him in the sand. He was yelling at his dad, over and over again, "Go away!"

And Dad just sat there - taking it. Pretty unrewarding if you ask me. Digging a sand bath is a lot of work.

It reminded me of something I learned many years ago:
What we allow becomes a habit!

Children aren't born knowing how to speak respectfully, show appreciation, or contribute to family life.

We teach them.
Not through yelling or punishment, but through calm, confident leadership and consistency.

When children learn that kindness, respect, and cooperation matter, they carry those skills into every situation and relationship they'll ever have.

Because life isn't meant to be a one-way life - it’s a give-and-take life!

After the first year of family life, it's not about parents giving, giving, giving while children take, take, take. No wonder teenagers get so annoyed at parents who occasionally expect some give-and-take!

There was a time when parenting felt simpler. Children grew up learning resilience, responsibility, confidence, and respect for their family.

Today, many parents are overwhelmed, exhausted, and second-guessing themselves constantly

I blame the pendulum swing!

We went from child abuse parenting to parent abuse child-led parenting.
Suddenly it’s ok for toddlers to teenagers to be rude to their parents.

It’s as if we all have to make up for the few maniacs who abused their children; we blamed every parent and, to counteract the damage, decided child-led, or gentle parenting, was the solution.

Well, look around, it’s not!

Kids need parents to love and lead them into tomorrow and the future.
Saying ‘no’ is not abuse.

Neither is getting kids to help, expecting respect in the form of ‘thank you’ or ‘please’, or teaching children courage, strength and the ability to do things that seem hard in the moment - along with many other things.

How on Earth will children cope in a world that refuses to cater to them?

The good news?

It’s never too late to stop pleading with your kids and start leading them.
How much do kids love their ballet teacher, their coach or the ones who push them a little and expect that they do their best?

KIDS ADORE THEM.

Children thrive when they have calm, confident parents who lead with love, clear boundaries and instructions when necessary AND consistency!

You Are Probably Making Your Life So Much Harder Than It Needs To Be
Parenting used to feel a lot simpler.

Children played in nature, families spent more time together, learning and growing, and kids usually grew up with confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of self and family. They dared to do things.

Today, many parents feel overwhelmed, exhausted, and unsure of what to do, and so do their children. Many have turned to defending and excusing poor behaviours, while hoping ‘over time’ it’ll get easier.
The thing is - it gets worse.

Let's face it, disrespect can wear on our nerves - until we crack/yell/whine.
If that's you, you're not alone.

For over 40 years, I've been raising children. My record is 100% more enjoyment for child and parent!

After sitting my kids down for a family meeting, I realized that they love stories! All I needed to do to get them helping was to wrap everything in a story.

After 20 years in fashion, I gave up my career to find out everything I could about inspiring children - so children could learn and grow from what I could teach them.
It was studying Early Childhood Development that helped my children to thrive… so I had to get this discovery to as many parents as possible - this was life-changing.

Instead of buying another boutique after my divorce, I decided to go to TAFE and learn how to become the mum who could show one million mums and dads how to be the parent that raises happy, respectful children.

There is nothing more important.

23 years later, that’s what I do.
Nothing has changed in my parenting arsenal; I've helped hundreds of families create calmer, happier homes through my Fair, Firm & Fun Role Model Parenting method.

Children don't need perfect parents.

They need calm, confident leaders who know how to guide them with love, boundaries, and most importantly, consistency.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR PARENTS

One of the biggest problems in parenting today is thinking that it's our job to do everything we possibly can for our children.

How will they feel if we teach them everything we possibly can instead?

It’s a parent's right and responsibility to teach our children how to do things for themselves - so, they become confident and capable!

Bossy kids don’t feel confident and capable - they just feel bossy.

Children thrive when they feel useful.
They thrive when they contribute.

They thrive when they know they're an important part of the family team.
The Happiness Institute found that the happiest people belong to a tribe and contribute to that tribe.

That's where steadfast confidence comes from. Not from getting everything we want without effort.

And telling kids they’re amazing is not rewarding if they aren’t earning it with some effort.

I see it all the time - parents praising children and children becoming more and more bossy.

True confidence comes from knowing we’re capable and, what we do matters - even if it’s just having manners or picking up a wet towel, our input makes a difference.

Your child doesn't need a perfect parent. (Besides - there’s no such thing) Children want and need a parent who is present and fun.

Fun means your smiling because being with your kids feels magical - they help, they listen and learn and they’re happy because you’re happy.

They absolutely need…
A parent who listens.
A parent who leads.

A parent who stays calm when life gets messy and who bounces back quickly, moving on to smiling and proud once more.

Role Model Parenting isn't about getting everything right, we all get things wrong sometimes, all parents and kids do - but it’s the energy, the ability to keep calm and the quick bounce back when things go wrong that determines how your children learn to behave.

You are teaching your kids how to handle challenges, solve problems, and treat others well by the way you handle your life when it’s good and bad - they are watching.

If your kids are not respectful it’s hard to be genuinely light hearted and happy. You can’t fake this stuff.

Children learn more from what we do more than what we say.
