I made sure we stopped into Riversands Winery at St George although I already had a bottle of their ‘so f@&$ing good port’. Stopped to check out their local dam system, where the kids finally played on a playground 🤗 finally!! (They don’t socialise with many other kids 🤣) drove through Surat and Tara before finding camp on between Dalby & Oakey for our last night of the trip!! Where we woke to the coldest morning of the entire trip with Ice on our windscreen.
Out west gets cold but it’s a different cold - it’s manageable. You can wear a shirt in 14° temps and be comfortable. But as we got closer to home it was a much colder cold. So weird to describe!
Our trip has come to an end - 9 nights/ 10 days of visiting the outback. Can definitely recommend everyone should give it a try!

Cotton fields everywhere you look driving through Dirranbandi, home to Cubbie station the largest cotton farm in the southern hemisphere. We just missed harvesting but there were bails everywhere!
Stopped in at Thallon for some silo art and of course the giant wombat. Then setup camp for the night at the Nindigully Pub with a 1000 other vans…. As the NSW holidays had just begun!

The mornings were chilly, thank goodness for our newly installed diesel heater - Charlotte sat in front of it most mornings 🤣 a quick stop to watch the sheering, then onto Eulo, a small opal town with big personality! The girls found some small chips of colour before we rolled into Cunnamulla. We were so excited to see the Cunnamulla hot springs …. A brand new building with 7 pool options, however it was closed!!! It opens 6-10am 4-7pm…. We were there at 11!!!
Although we were thankful when we saw it was $45pp to use it 😳😳😳
Then it was onto Charlotte plains! Hot aerial baths, bore pump and the bore channel that runs for 164kms! A little oasis in the middle of nowhere.
There’s nothing like walking around in your swimmers in 8° temps at night time 🤣, then getting up in the morning in 5° temps to do it all again. The water is hot but the walk back the van is very chilly 🥶.

Finally a dirt road! We took a detour from Thargomindah into Yowah, a small town for opal hunting, then into Alton Station. A 65000 acre sheep/ cattle farm, that offers paddock camping, and hot artesian baths 🫶.

On the way to Thargomindah another pub stop (of course) Toompine. Great hospitality - we were recommended to stop here by the nice people of tyre power Charleville.
Thargomindah a town that recently got destroyed by floods, the damage was apparent everywhere you looked, slip bins, shipping containers of materials, people living in caravans due to the house being pulled apart, however they were so welcoming and friendly! The sheer amount of water they experienced would’ve been terrifying!
Fun fact - Thargomindah was the first place in Australia to have lights operational by the power of water…. So cool!

A late departure from Charleville after lunch had us pushing into Quilpie for the night, bia a quick beer atop at the smallest town in queensland ‘Cooladdi’ before we set up camp on the Bulloo River. The stars were spectacular, the morning was freezing! But the town of Quilpie was beautiful. Great country hospitality- no eftpos at the bakery but the tastiest treats 😋 a quick wander through the museums (kids were over them) then a little walk up Baldy tops just outside of town, had us gasping for air as it was still so cold! Such spectacular views of the plains all around 😍
