🎶 Help Us Bring Our Christmas Concert to The Jazz Lab! 🎄

Melbourne Performing Arts Academy is preparing for an incredible Christmas concert for children and young musicians of all ages on 29 November at The Jazz Lab, Brunswick — and we would love your support to help make it happen!

For many of our students, this will be their first opportunity to step onto the stage of a professional live-music venue. They will perform piano, guitar, ukulele, singing, drums and more, with our pianists experiencing the magic of performing on a beautiful grand piano.

We are raising funds to help cover the cost of hosting our concert at The Jazz Lab, while also supporting this wonderful venue and Melbourne’s live-music community.

Every donation, big or small, helps. ❤️

Your contribution gives children an unforgettable opportunity to perform, build confidence and celebrate everything they have achieved through music — while helping us support the venues that keep live music alive in Melbourne.

🎹 Support our students. Support The Jazz Lab. Support live music.

Thank you for helping us make 29 November an unforgettable day for our young musicians! 🎄✨

Meet Natasha – Founder of the Melbourne Performing Arts Academy

Hi, I’m Natasha, founder of the Melbourne Performing Arts Academy.

Nine years ago, I established the Academy with a simple vision: to bring people together and enrich lives through the transformative power of music education.

In 2017, I designed and launched our unique World Music-inspired, multi-instrumental Kindergarten program, drawing on the renowned Kodály and Orff approaches. From the very beginning, my goal was to inspire a lifelong love of music while helping children develop confidence, creativity, resilience and a genuine passion for learning.

It has been incredibly rewarding to watch our students grow into talented young musicians and confident, successful young people. Seeing their achievements and love of music flourish has been one of the greatest joys of my career.

Today, the Melbourne Performing Arts Academy has grown into a dedicated team of exceptional teachers, and we are thrilled to have expanded to our beautiful new home at Pentridge, where we continue to welcome students of all ages and abilities.

I am also delighted to offer specialised AMEB Classical Piano lessons on Sundays by appointment, tailored to support students preparing for examinations or wishing to develop strong classical piano skills.

Whether you’re beginning your musical journey or looking to advance your skills, we’d love to welcome you to our musical community.

Visit our website to enrol and discover how music can inspire confidence, creativity and a lifetime of enjoyment.

Playing the piano is often considered one of the most complex — and rewarding — activities the human brain and body can do because it combines so many skills at the same time.

Here’s why piano playing is so powerful:

🎹 It uses both sides of the brain simultaneously
Reading music, interpreting rhythm, controlling emotion, listening carefully, and coordinating movement all happen together. Pianists constantly engage memory, language processing, mathematics, creativity, and fine motor control at once.

🧠 It builds extraordinary coordination
Each hand is often doing something completely different while the eyes read ahead and the ears monitor sound. The brain must coordinate:

* Left hand
* Right hand
* Foot pedals
* Sight reading
* Timing
* Dynamics
* Expression

Very few activities require this many simultaneous processes.

🎼 It strengthens memory and concentration
Learning repertoire improves:

* Working memory
* Pattern recognition
* Attention span
* Problem solving
* Discipline and persistence

Many studies suggest music training can improve cognitive flexibility and lifelong brain health.

❤️ It develops emotional intelligence
Music is communication without words. Pianists learn to interpret mood, storytelling, emotion, and nuance. Playing can reduce stress, improve wellbeing, and provide emotional release.

👂 It sharpens listening skills
Pianists constantly analyse pitch, tone, harmony, balance, rhythm, and phrasing. This deep listening improves overall musicality and auditory processing.

👨‍👩‍👧 It benefits learners of all ages
For children, piano can support:

* Fine motor skills
* Confidence
* Literacy and numeracy connections
* Creativity

For adults and seniors, it can help maintain:

* Memory
* Dexterity
* Focus
* Emotional wellbeing

🎵 It combines science, art, language, and movement
Piano is mathematical, physical, emotional, and artistic all at once — making it one of the most holistic learning experiences available.

Many educators inspired by approaches like Carl Orff and Zoltán Kodály believe music education helps develop the whole person, not just musical ability.

A beautiful way to describe piano playing is this:

“The piano teaches the hands to work, the ears to listen, the eyes to read, and the heart to feel — all at the same time.”
