Founded by the private hospital sector and healthcare researchers, the Academy has developed courses to provided pathways to the Carers profession since 2005. The Australian College of Studies [ACOS], formally known as the Australian Academy of Nursing has dedicated itself to forging bonds between academia,

industry, and the community. Our commitment to our students is strengthened by our belief that the Carers profession provides a worthwhile opportunity to care for the vulnerable members of our community. The Academy integrates teaching with research led by lecturers and trainers who are experienced practitioners in the sector. This achieves personalised training of Carers from diverse backgrounds. Our campus brings together small, well-coordinated groups of students with overseas and local qualifications, and entry level knowledge. These groups are engaged in a dynamic non-traditional learning environment which integrates classroom teaching, online learning, clinical laboratory sessions, and practical placement in both hospitals and care facilities.

Rain or Shine, Learning Goes On!

Our Diploma of Community Services students headed to Cockatoo Island on 17 August for an exciting day of exploration and learning outside the classroom!

The excursion gave students an opportunity to reflect on community needs, access, inclusion, and the importance of advocacy within community services, while experiencing the environment beyond the classroom.

Despite the rainy weather, our students made the most of the day, stayed positive, and enjoyed the experience together!

Because learning doesn’t stop when the rain starts! 💙

Welcoming National University-Clark to Australian College of Studies

We were delighted to welcome Prof. Paul Balagtas from NU Clark to ACOS for a two-day visit. 🇵🇭🇦🇺

Although his time with us was short, we truly appreciated the opportunity to host him and engage in meaningful discussions on how we can further strengthen the partnership between ACOS and NU Clark.

The visit was a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas, explore opportunities for collaboration, and build on our shared commitment to creating meaningful experiences and opportunities for our students and institutions.

Learning Outside the Classroom: Creating Connections Through the Dharug Yarning Circle

The students were actively engaged, worked collaboratively, and confidently shared their creations within the Dharug Yarning Circle at Parramatta Square. The activity clearly encouraged participation, creativity, cultural respect, and reflection rather than simply completing a craft task.

The practical activity involved students creating a "Talking Stick Character" using paddle pop sticks and craft materials. Each student designed a unique character representing themselves, their emotions, strengths, or personal experiences. Once completed, students took turns sharing the meaning behind their creations within the Yarning Circle.

From a training perspective, the activity successfully linked theory with practice by demonstrating concepts such as:

- Cultural safety
- Person-centred communication
- Reflective practice
- Building trust and rapport
- Emotional wellbeing
- Community participation
- Respect for diversity

The students commented that they enjoyed learning outside the classroom and appreciated having an opportunity to express themselves in a creative and supportive environment. Many stated that they felt more connected to their classmates after hearing each other's stories.

Refugee Week: Capoeira Workshop

Last week, the Diploma of Community Services (DCS) class under Sabina Harrouk attended a vibrant Capoeira Workshop as part of Refugee Week.

Through Brazilian music, dance, movement, and traditional instruments, students experienced how culture, creativity, and community can bring people together and promote inclusion. The workshop highlighted the resilience and strength of people from refugee backgrounds while celebrating the diversity that enriches our communities.

Participating in the activities encouraged respect for different cultures, strengthened social connections, and reinforced the importance of creating welcoming and inclusive environments. It was a valuable learning experience that enhanced students' understanding of cultural diversity, social inclusion, and community engagement—key principles in the community services sector.

🌿 Educational Field Trip – Cockatoo Island 🌿

Our Diploma of Community Services students recently visited Cockatoo Island as part of the unit Promote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Safety led by Trainer Nazia.

Students engaged in cultural activities including traditional music, dance, storytelling, Aboriginal-inspired painting, and group discussions focused on respect, inclusion, and culturally safe practices in community services.

This meaningful experience encouraged deeper understanding, reflection, and appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and connections to Country. 💛🖤❤️
