Why Alex chose the Master of Pharmaceutical Science (MPharmSci) at Monash after industry experience.

After completing a bachelor’s degree in Australia, Alex spent a year working across both commercial and research roles within the pharmaceutical industry. This experience highlighted the importance of advanced scientific training for those seeking to progress in drug development and research.

The Master of Pharmaceutical Science at Monash provides a comprehensive understanding of the drug discovery and development pipeline, integrating areas such as drug design, formulation, and clinical development. The program combines foundational theory with applied laboratory training and industry-relevant skills.

A defining feature of the course is its extended placement, which enables students to gain practical experience in research or industry settings and supports the transition into professional roles.

During the program, Alex undertook a research placement focused on neurodegenerative diseases, which further developed an interest in neuroscience and led to progression into a PhD.

The MPharmSci is well suited to students and professionals seeking to deepen their expertise, transition into research, or advance within the pharmaceutical and related industries.

What is Her Research Matters and why it matters at Monash Parkville Campus?

Only 17 per cent of senior scientists within Australian universities are women. Her Research Matters (HRM) responds to this challenge by supporting women and gender diverse researchers within the Monash Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

HRM is a grassroots, Faculty led initiative based at Monash in Parkville. It focuses on creating a more inclusive and equitable research environment by supporting career progression, strengthening professional networks, and increasing the visibility and impact of research led by women. The collective brings together researchers at different career stages, along with allies, to help remove systemic barriers and foster leadership in science.

Through networking and sponsorship, advocacy for policy change, and initiatives that showcase research excellence, HRM contributes to a stronger research culture across the Faculty. Its work supports early and established researchers, creates role models for the next generation, and connects research with broader national and international communities.

Join HRM and see how Her Research Matters has been shaping conversations, opportunities and connections at Monash, and why this work continues to be important for the future of research.

🙂‍↔️👉 Monash University ranks second globally for Pharmacy and Pharmacology in the 2026 QS World University Rankings by Subject, and is the leading program in Australia and the Asia Pacific.

Students in Pharmacy and Pharmacology at Monash learn from researchers and educators who work across drug discovery, clinical pharmacy and the safe and effective use of medicines. They explore how new medicines are developed and how existing medicines can be used more effectively to improve patient care.

Monash researchers in this field also contribute to work that responds to growing global health challenges. This includes fundamental science, clinical studies and collaborative projects with partners across government, industry and the health sector. Their research helps shape how medicines are developed, regulated and used around the world.

Study in this field can lead to careers in community and hospital pharmacy, the pharmaceutical industry, research and policy. Students build skills in scientific thinking, problem solving and communication, which are valued across many roles connected to medicines and healthcare.

This result forms part of a strong performance for Monash across multiple disciplines in this year’s rankings and reflects the collective efforts of all Faculties across the University. Read more about the rankings via the link in our bio.

International Women’s Day 2026: Celebrating leadership and equity in STEMM

Last night, Monash University marked International Women’s Day 2026 with a Women in STEMM Alumni event exploring this year’s theme, . The conversation focused on the barriers that continue to limit women’s and girls’ access to justice, safety and opportunity, including climate vulnerability and underrepresentation in STEMM.

The event brought together alumnae and industry leaders working across climate, justice and gender equity to discuss how community‑driven solutions can shape more inclusive futures. Former Global Voices CEO Elly Hanrahan delivered the keynote address, offering insights into global advocacy and the power of collaborative leadership.

Professor Karin Leder moderated a panel featuring Dr Catherine Lopes (EPA Non‑Executive Director; Co‑Founder, Ada’s Tribe; Strategy Advisor, Infosys), Chloe Chang (Mechanical Engineer, Lunar Outpost) and Grace Wong (Founder, Pharmacists for the Environment Australia). Each shared their perspectives on navigating gender imbalances in their fields and the practical steps required to strengthen representation and impact.

This annual event reflects Monash’s commitment to supporting women in STEMM and amplifying the work of our global alumni community driving meaningful change.
