We’re pleased to introduce one of our panellists, Matt Fisher, who maintains Inspect Evals, the open-source framework for evaluating frontier AI systems.

Matt spent over a decade in industry as the first employee and Director of Engineering at Edrolo, the edtech platform used across Australian high schools, where he built and led development from its founding in 2013 to 2024. In 2024 he moved into AI safety, contributing to Inspect Evals through the AI Safety Engineering Taskforce (ASET).

Today, at Generality Labs (recently spun out of Arcadia Impact), he maintains the Inspect Evals framework on behalf of the UK AI Security Institute and is building tools to automate the auditing of AI evaluations.

Join Matt as he shares how he ended up working in the heart of AI safety, and what it takes to build the tools that measure how safe frontier AI systems really are.

Meet Hannah Meagher, one of our panellists and a Research Engineer at Equistamp.

Hannah graduated with a Bachelor of Mathematics and Computer Science from UWA in December 2025. She was a core developer on LinuxArena/ControlTower, an AI control setting built in collaboration with Redwood Research - work that fed into the safety evaluations in Anthropic’s Fable and Mythos system cards and won Best Paper at the ICML 2026 Agents in the Wild workshop.

She has since moved to a project with the EU AI Office, modelling risks around loss of human oversight of advanced AI and the misuse of AI for CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear) threats.

Join Hannah as she shares her path from recent graduate to the frontier of AI control research, and what drew her to the field.

We’re pleased to welcome back Michael Kerrison, Executive Director of AI Safety Australia & New Zealand.

Michael leads AI Safety Australia & New Zealand, where he works to grow the AI safety community and build pathways for people entering the field across both countries. His field-building work spans the Sydney AI Safety Fellowship, which he organises in Melbourne to help newcomers find their footing; the AI Safety Unconference Melbourne; and Aotearoa’s inaugural AI Safety Conference in Christchurch, which he co-hosts.

He came to this work after an earlier career as a management and analytics consultant, and now works to help others navigate their own paths into AI safety.

Join Michael as he shares what it takes to build a career in AI safety today, the routes into the field he sees opening up, and how students can take their first steps.

​DSCubed and RAID are coming together to host our flagship AI hackathon open to all students!

​We’ve all heard the buzz around AI, but how does it actually translate into the real world and real businesses?

​Forward is a 48-hour hackathon focused specifically on applying AI in a business setting. Bring your ideas, form a team, and tackle real-world challenges across multiple tracks.

​📣 What to Expect:

​🧑‍💼 Experienced mentors on hand to support you throughout the hackathon
​👩‍⚖️ External judges from academia and industry
​🏆 $3,000 prize pool across overall and track prizes
​🤝 A chance to meet, build, and collaborate with other students interested in AI
​💡 Real-world business focused tracks designed around practical applications of AI
​💼 Potential internship and job opportunities at Eleno

​🎉 OPENING NIGHT
Thursday 10 September · 5:30–7:30pm
Kick off Forward with a keynote from Eleno, an AI workshop, and the opportunity to meet other participants and find your team.

​🏁 48-HOUR HACKATHON BEGINS
Saturday 12 September · 12pm
The challenge tracks are revealed and building begins. Throughout the hackathon, you’ll have access to coworking spaces, mentors, and support to help bring your project to life.

​⏳ SUBMISSIONS CLOSE
Monday 14 September · 12pm
The 48 hours are up. Finalise and submit your project for judging.

​​📣 FINALISTS ANNOUNCED
Monday 14 September · 4pm
The top teams will be selected to pitch their projects live at Closing Night.

​🎤 CLOSING NIGHT
Monday 14 September · 5:30–8:30pm
Finalists pitch to a panel of judges from academia and industry, followed by the announcement of the winners and $3,000 in prizes. 🏆

📣 Do you want to have a say in how the university manages student data?
All UoM students and GRs (over the age of 18) are invited to participate in a 2-hour interactive workshop, where students can share their views and ideas about how data should be governed at our university. They will collaborative and creative two hours, using simple, arts-based activities to help us reflect, discuss, and imagine fairer and more inclusive data practices together with other students.
No prior knowledge or technical background is needed.
Food and drinks will be provided. 🍕
