Our Class 6 Seekers class recently enjoyed a wonderfully rewarding excursion to Peninsula Farm, complementing their Local History Main Lesson.

Peninsula Farm at Wu-rut Woorat was one of the first farms in the Swan River Colony.

The Seekers weighed food rations and learned about working from dawn to dusk on Peninsula Farm. They delighted in learning how many livestock sailed all the way from Europe, and they even saw what is believed to be WA’s first sewing machine.

Local History was considered a foundation subject by Rudolf Steiner, core to a child’s holistic development. As a Main Lesson, it grounds the child with a deeply felt understanding of the place in which they live and learn.

Introducing Djilyara. - the name gifted to our new Class 1s this term, by their class teacher Rosie.

For those that aren't familiar, Djilyara is the Noongar name for the WA native blue-banded bee. Djilyara is a friend we see every day throughout southern Western Australia, and of course, right here at Silver Tree.

When the Silver Tree Steiner School community recently gathered for assembly, we were treated to one of the most special occasions of the school year. When a Class 1 Teacher names their class, a subtle shift occurs in the consciousness of the school. “I love it!" and "How clever!” can be heard from children, parents, and faculty.

Class Teacher Rosie was patient in allowing the name to come forth through observations of the children. Djilyara is a gentle bee, both solitary and social, whose busy work pollinates a wider variety of native plants than any other bee.

"The Djilyara children are a group of busy bees! They love to immerse themselves in nature and work with the natural materials readily available to them. They love to get their hands dirty, turning the ground as they build, craft, dig, problem-solve, and create. Just like Djilyara, they are hardworking and determined and can quickly adapt to the changes around them. I see a group with the strength and confidence to work and be by themselves, while simultaneously knowing when to work together in harmony and cohesion." Rosie, Class Teacher.

Djilyara, may your name anchor your journey at Silver Tree and retain a deeply held meaning for you and your Class Teacher, always.

Wishing you all a restful mid-term break. We’ll see you back at school on Tuesday 25th August.

Yira Mandja recently brought the story of Thor’s wedding to life through their brilliant Norse Myths class play, "The Lost Hammer". Their play featured amazing strings performances by the children, imaginative costumes, and realistic paper mache props. Class plays are always a highlight of the Silver Tree Steiner School calendar. Congratulations on an outstanding play, Yira Mandja!
