Southern Ocean Education is mobile marine education business where we bring the marine life to you! The new home for Seaweed Sally.

For 19 years we have been delivering marine education programs to kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools! Based in Parkdale we visit thoughout greater Melbourne and beyond delivering a unique, fun and a “hands on” experience into the mysterious world of marine life - the animals, their environment and how to preserve and protect them. That's right the marine life is brought to you.

A great way to learn about the marine environment and save on transport costs. We deliver programs to preschools, primary schools, secondary schools, holiday programs, special events and birthday parties. Live rockpool creatures will thrill your senses, and real preserved marine specimens will leave you amazed. All programs are delivered by qualified marine scientists and are guaranteed to get your sleeves wet!

🦀 Do you have a degree in marine/environmental science or teaching?
🐬Do you have experience working with children and the ability to gain a Working with Children Check?
🐡 Do you live within 15km of Braeside where our warehouse is situated.
🐟 Do you have your own car and license?
🐠Do have the ability to lift 15kg and fit and healthy?
🐳 Do you have availability to work week days, school hours.

Award wages will be paid, training provided, and immediate start preferred.

Looking for some free school holiday activities!
This video is from my daily walk along my blue backyard on the shores of Port Phillip Bay today in Parkdale. Keep your eyes peeled 👀🐬You would be amazed what you might see. Why not rug up, put the winter woolies on and go on a Winter beach adventure. No matter the weather there is always something to see.

Seaweed Sally’s Creature Feature: Species of the Week
⭐ Schayer’s Brittle Star ⭐

Say hello to the snake-like brittle star!
Often found hiding beneath boulders in the intertidal zone, these secretive creatures prefer to stay out of the spotlight. If their rocky home is overturned, they'll quickly scurry away from the light using their long, flexible arms.

🌟 Fun fact: Schayer's brittle stars can reproduce without a mate through a process called fissiparity. The brittle star splits its central disc in two, with each half regenerating the missing body parts to become a brand-new clone!
✨ As an added survival trick, they can also drop the ends of their arms when threatened. These detached arm tips glow with a green luminescence, helping to distract predators while the brittle star escapes.

Seaweed Sally’s Creature Feature: Species of the Week
🐌 The Elephant Snail 🐌

Say hello to the unusual elephant snail!
This fascinating creature is a favourite for many ocean lovers thanks to its unique appearance and size. The elephant snail is well known for its striking black mantle, and has a white, shield-shaped shell that is often completely hidden beneath the black mantle covering its body.

🌟 Fun fact: Elephant snails emerge at night to graze on seaweeds along rocky shores.

Happy World Turtle Day! 🐢

Here at Southern Ocean Education, we love celebrating the ocean and all the incredible marine life within! 💙

Sea turtles are ancient, air-breathing reptiles that have been swimming in our oceans for millions of years. Found in tropical and sub-tropical waters, there are seven distinct species worldwide and sadly, all are now threatened or endangered due to human impacts.

🐢 Protect nesting beaches from light and rubbish
🐢 Support sustainable fishing practices

This World Turtle Day, let’s commit to being stewards of the sea and do our part to protect these amazing ocean travellers for generations to come. 🌏💙

Seaweed Sally’s Creature Feature: Species of the Week
⭐ The Biscuit Sea Star ⭐

Say hello to the colourful biscuit sea star!
Known for its bright orange-red mottled colouring and firm, flat texture that resembles a biscuit, this beautiful sea star is a favourite amongst marine explorers. Biscuit sea stars typically grow to around 5–10 cm and can often be found clinging to rocky reefs and jetty pylons in waters up to 40 metres deep.

🌟 Fun fact: Unlike some sea stars with long pointed arms, the biscuit sea star has short, rounded arms that give its distinctive biscuit-like shape.

Seaweed Sally’s Creature Feature: Species of the Week
🪨 The Sea Sq**rt 🪨

Say hello to the mysterious sea sq**rt!
Also known as an ascidian, this clever creature is a master of camouflage, often looking just like a rock in the intertidal zone. But don’t be fooled, there’s more than meets the eye!

🌟 Fun fact: Sea sq**rts are sessile filter feeders, meaning they stay attached in one spot for their whole adult life and filter water through their siphons to feed. As the tide goes out, they hold water inside their bodies to stop from drying out and if gently touched at low tide, they can sq**rt out a jet of water like a tiny water pistol! 💦

Seaweed Sally’s Creature Feature of the Week
🟣 The Short-Spined Sea Urchin 🟣

Say hello to the spiky short-spined sea urchin!
These small but mighty grazers play an important role in our marine ecosystems, but when their numbers grow too large, they can overgraze kelp forests, leaving behind bare rocky areas known as “urchin barrens.” 🌿

🍽️ In some places, sea urchins are becoming a popular seafood choice, which can actually help manage their growing populations and protect our beautiful kelp forests.

🌟 Fun fact: A sea urchin’s mouth is on the underside of its body, just like a sea star!
