SCHOOL TV // A recent study highlighted that body image is one of the top three concerns for Australian youth. Over half of girls in high schools have tried to lose weight. One-third of teenage boys wanted to be thinner and another third wanted to be larger. Children need to understand that their body shape and size is not a reflection of their health or success. Parents and schools need to work together to help kids understand that everyone is born with their own ‘body-suit’.

In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will learn how to encourage their child to have a positive body image and why it is so important to their mental health.

SCHOOL TV // Why Most Parenting Advice is Wrong - Yuko Munakata

Parenting books promise to show people how to raise happy, successful children, and in the process to reveal why each of us turned out the way we did. But the science of child development tells a different story about how parents influence children—a story that may shock, unsettle, and ultimately reassure anyone who has ever been a parent or a child. Yuko is a Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of Colorado Boulder. Her work investigates child development and environmental influences on children’s thinking, using behavioral, neuroimaging, and computational approaches. She is an elected fellow of the Association for Psychological Science and the American Psychological Association.

SCHOOL TV // Anxiety & Young People

Anxiety is a natural and expected part of growing up. In fact, it plays an important role in helping young people prepare for challenges, stay alert to potential dangers and adapt to new situations. It can motivate them to study for a test, practise before a performance, or tread carefully in unfamiliar settings. However, for many children and adolescents today, anxiety can shift from being a helpful response to becoming intense, persistent and disruptive.

This edition of SchoolTV raises awareness and provides families with practical strategies to help young people manage anxiety in healthy, constructive ways.

LUNCHTIME // To support a healthy balance and reduce screen time throughout the school day, we will gradually phase out the use of laptops during break times. The Library is now a device-free space during recess and lunch on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

The Library is the perfect place to:
📖 Read and relax
🎲 Play board games, cards or chess
📚 Borrow your next great read
✍️ Complete written homework
🤝Relax in a quiet, welcoming space

Break times are also a great opportunity to:
🥪 Eat your lunch and recharge.
⚽ Get active outside with your friends.
🌿 Take a break from screens and enjoy the moment.
