This week, we're highlighting another important approach: Praise the Strategy. While it can be tempting to praise your child for being ‘smart’, research shows it is even more powerful to recognise the strategies they use and the effort they put in.

When you notice your child trying a new method, sticking with a challenge, or thinking things through—be specific with your praise. For example: “I saw how you broke the problem into smaller steps—fantastic thinking!” This type of feedback reinforces positive behaviours and dispositions, and helps your child understand that effort and perseverance lead to learning.

Let’s celebrate the process, not just the outcome. This simple shift builds resilience and encourages your child to keep trying, even when things get tough.

Yesterday, Mrs Mickan and the 3-6 afternoon group were busily researching options for a new garden!

They were researching more sustainable and affordable ways to start the garden, learning about it different ways to propagate and grow plants. They had to look into different fruits and veggies that would thrive in our garden.

Mrs Mickan is fantastic at extending our learning experiences through very practical real-life contexts 🤩🧑🏻‍🌾🌱

Unfortunately I will be absent tomorrow and miss out on my favourite part of the week; Fire Pit Friday! 🔥

Thankfully, Mrs Mickan is ensuring that this fabulous event still goes ahead in my absence tomorrow. We also thank Dan Kenny for coordinating our event again this week!

Everyone is welcome to join- wider community members included! It is a brilliant opportunity to connect with our community members and have some fun in a relaxed environment. 🫶🏽

Please note: parents and carers are responsible for their child's safety and behaviour during this event. This also means that children are not permitted to join in on the event if they are without a parent/carer.

Mr K is a fabulous relief teacher that we get the pleasure of working with from time to time!

He is connected to some merchandise suppliers through his sport of running (he is a super runner!). One of those suppliers is VIVA Sport, who supply SAPSASA with their merchandise for schools and sports events.

When collecting the merchandise for an event back in June, VIVA offered him some goodies as giveaways, and 6 free footballs!
Since it was for a running event, the footballs didn't necessarily suit as giveaways.
So... Mr K thought about who he could donate the footballs to. He thought about who would appreciate them the most and his first choice was us, here at OPS!

We are incredibly grateful for everything Mr K does, and want to take a moment to thank him for his ongoing work at OPS, and for his generous donation.

Mr K, you are awesome!

Our Term 3 journey is focused on developing effective learners who think strategically, and we are delighted to have your support!

You have already seen an overview of our goals for this term, and now we are excited to share practical strategies that you can use at home to support your child’s learning.

Over the next few weeks, I will share detailed posts on each of the four strategies highlighted in the Term 3 Site Learning Plan overview. These will provide you with further information on the strategies and practical ideas for how to use them with your child at home.

The first strategy is: Ask, Don't Tell. Instead of giving your child an answer immediately, try asking them what they think or what solutions they have already considered. This approach encourages children to become confident problem-solvers and independent thinkers. You might be surprised at how much they already know!

Your questions can help guide your child to greater independence and a deeper understanding of their learning. Together, we can help them discover the answers within themselves.
