Michelle spent a full day with the incredible team of OTs, Speech Pathologists and Educators at Kool Katts, a dynamic and dedicated team she’s had the privilege of mentoring for over 2 years now.

They started the day with a deep dive into:

⭐️ The elements we curate that promote neuroplasticity: providing experiences that are the just right challenge prompting an adaptive response; and providing attuned serve-and-return interactions

⭐️ Developmental of Self regulation

⭐️ The science underlying regulation including Polyvagal Theory

⭐️ Attunement and sensory motor strategies that support regulation and movement towards readiness to engage and learn

The afternoon involved lots of hands on experiences in the clinic, which is always energising and fun!

It was also Kool Katts 9th anniversary- huge congratulations to you all for co-creating a dedicated and cohesive team.

It’s happening!

Soph, Cory and I launched our little book club last night, 8pm Friday night (because that’s the kind of keen beans we are 😳).
We perused our shelves and pulled together a long list of books not yet devoured.
Our hope is that by meeting monthly we’ll keep those pages turning.

First on the list is Wired to Feel - Autism as a Condition of Sensory Surplus, Sarah Bergenfield and Martha Sweeney. Have you read it yet?

I love to walk as the sun is rising. Something awe inspiring always occurs. Sometimes I see or hear something in nature - like watching this mob of kangaroos snacking in our paddock. Other times a wonderful, funny, tangential thought pops into my mind. This mornings idea was - I wondered if I’m third generation in Dr Jean Ayre’s paediatric OT family? Am I?

RESTORATION ||

I often feel compelled to restore my energy at home, my haven. Spending time in the garden, walking our dog, sipping coffee, listening to an audio book, slower Sunday morning spent pottering. This weekend in beautiful Launceston Tasmanian reminded me that travel is restorative too. With mindful intention I can slow down, be immersed in the wonder of nature, have fun with new friends as well time spent in solitude, eat fabulous food, enjoy the occasional drink and devour a book. In transit I listened to one of the best books I’ve read: Theo of Golden by Allen Levi is absolutely devine. .stackhouse and this book reminded me of you ❤️ I hope you all had a fab weekend too x

Last week I joined Camp Jabiru for an intense, immersive and deeply meaningful experience, one that I will reflect on, and cherish forever.

It was one of those experiences that’s hard to put into words, but try to conjure:

🍀 nearly 100 kids ‘having the best week of their life’ at a huge outdoor adventure centre. Think - scaling rock walls, walking in the tree tops, ricocheting through the air on the giant swings, building rafts and setting sail, singing and dancing around the campfire each night. So much opportunity for fun and challenge!

🍀 over 100 OT’s and OT students from across Australia and USA co-creating the Jabiru ethos for each and every child:
🌟 I have been seen
🌟 My voice matters
🌟 I belong

🍀 observing OT’s with immense experience providing therapy dawn to dusk. And when kids were finally asleep, engaging in deep clinical reasoning and reflection using the SpIRIT and STEPPSI tools well into the night.

🍀 kids and adults alike, feeling the sun on our skin by day, warmth of the campfire by night; hearing laughter and song; seeing smiles, tears, frustration, vulnerability and bravery.

🍀 honking my horn farewelling friends new and old, smiling from ear to ear, and feeling immense joy at having contributed as best I could to creating an experience kids and OT’s will never forget.

No photos of the kids to share but you can imagine how they are feeling when the adults are having this much fun!
