What an incredible gift for Orange.

Yesterday we were very fortunate to attend the launch of Orange Health Service’s new Pop-Up Piano, one of just 10 pianos placed across Australia from more than 200 applications.

The piano comes from the ABC TV series The Piano, and Dr Yantra de Vilder, Consultant Producer for Social Impact at the ABC, spoke about the outstanding application submitted by Orange volunteer Don Saville and how pleased she was to be in Orange to celebrate its arrival.

To mark the occasion, Yantra also composed and performed a piece especially for the piano and for Orange, beautifully titled The Keys to Healing.

The launch concert brought together musicians from across the hospital and our community, including ORC Head of Keyboard Alexey Yemtsov and ORC student Max Chudleigh, who gave a beautiful performance of A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square. We were very proud to see Max sharing his music on such a special occasion.

This piano now belongs in a place where music can perhaps do some of its most important work, offering patients, families, visitors and hospital staff a moment to stop, listen, play, connect or simply find a little comfort in their day.

We are incredibly fortunate to have it here in Orange and very thankful to everyone who made it possible. Congratulations Orange Health Service. We can't wait to hear what is played on these keys for many years to come.

The self-described “world folk jazz band” Estampa certainly lived up to expectations as they performed at the ORC last Friday evening. The quartet presented a lively program of arrangements for their unusual combination of instruments, with works ranging from Django Reinhardt to Chopin, plus some beautiful original compositions in the mix as well.

The following morning saw community members of a wide range of instruments, skill levels, and ages take part in one of the most engaging workshops we’ve hosted in quite a while! Estampa’s effortless instruction ensured all who took part were playing and improvising along with them in no time.

Our sincere thanks to Estampa for including Orange on their regional tour, and to Musica Viva Australia and the Godfrey Turner Memorial Music Trust, whose generous support enables these artists and experiences to be brought to Orange.

Led by the extremely knowledgeable Gabriel Rae, every class is packed with fascinating insights, surprising connections and those "I never knew that!" moments. If you've ever been to Brewery Choir at Badlands, you'll already know Gabe has an incredible collection of music facts tucked away in her brain and this is her chance to share them.

Louise Watts is joining us as one of our Early Childhood Music educators

With more than a decade of experience leading early childhood music programs in both Australia and Germany, Louise is passionate about helping children discover the joy of music through singing, movement, play and creativity.

As the founder of Baby Music Berlin, Louise has inspired hundreds of babies, toddlers and preschoolers to begin their musical journey, creating classes that not only nurture young musicians but also build confidence, curiosity and connection for the whole family.

Louise also brings experience in vocal education and choir directing, having founded and led the Berlin Children's Choir for 13 years.

We can't wait for our ORC families to meet Louise in Term 3 and experience the warmth, energy and expertise she brings to our community.
