Try counting how many times you say sorry today. I'd put money on it being more than you think.

"Sorry to bother you." "Sorry I'm late." Somewhere along the way we started apologising for existing, let alone for having a boundary.

Here's the swap I gave a room full of clinicians recently. Turn "sorry to bother you" into "thanks for waiting." Same moment, completely different energy, and no apology needed for taking up space.

You're allowed to state what you're able to do without softening it with sorry.

I talk boundaries, burnout, burnout recovery, prevention, and leadership every week on The Burnout Recovery Podcast. Link in bio to listen

It happens before you've even thought about it. Someone asks, and your mouth is already agreeing before your brain's caught up. That's not a personality flaw. That's years of training that treated saying no as a failure of commitment.

Boundary Scripts for Clinicians gives you twelve scripts for the moments this happens most, the overfull list, the after hours message, the favour you can't actually give. Word for word, so you've got the language ready before you need it, not after.

Swipe to see the video masterclass that comes with it, five short recordings where I walk through what a boundary actually is, the neuroscience behind why we don't set them, and how to deliver these scripts so they land instead of starting a fight.

No is a full sentence. You just need the words to back it up.

When you're under chronic stress, your brain defaults to whatever pathway already feels familiar and safe. So if the recovery strategy you've picked up asks you to behave in a way that's fundamentally uncomfortable for your temperament, you're not just building a new habit. You're trying to build it in exactly the conditions where your brain is most resistant to anything unfamiliar.

That's why a tool you've tried and abandoned more than once probably wasn't a willpower failure. It was a mismatch.

My latest podcast episode walks through how to find the version of recovery that fits your wiring, across mindset, support, movement and sleep, instead of forcing someone else's system.

Why does the exact same recovery strategy work brilliantly for one person and do nothing for the next?

This week in Episode 196 of The Burnout Recovery Podcast I get into the real reasons, the psychology, the occupational context, and the stress neuroscience behind why some tools stick and others don't.

Plus the four recovery pillars, mindset, support, movement, sleep, and how to find your own version of each instead of forcing someone else's.

The reasons people enter healthcare are deeply personal. Purpose, contribution, the pull toward helping people in vulnerable moments. That motivation is real and it matters.

But people change. Circumstances change. What felt like an uncomplicated calling at the start of a career can get more complicated over time - and that's not something to feel guilty about.

This week, revisit your why. Not to judge it or fix it - just to see where it's at now. A values check-in every now and then is a healthy thing, not a crisis.

Have a great week 😊

That inner critic feels like it's keeping you safe. In reality it's just keeping you exhausted.

I see this play out with healthcare professionals constantly. The self talk that sounds like accountability but is actually just punishment in disguise.

Swapping it for compassion isn't about letting yourself off the hook. It's about giving yourself the same grace you'd offer a colleague having a hard day.

A full week isn't the problem. Doing the same thing over and over, with no break in between, is what actually wears you down.

So here's something simple to try heading into next week. Look for one thing that's genuinely different, a different kind of task, a different group of people, a different way of thinking. And protect one proper break, not just a gap between meetings, but real rest.

Two small things. That's it. They'll do more for you than trying to clear your whole calendar.

There's a concept in organisational psychology called emotional contagion. It's the reason a leader's mood can move through a whole team within minutes, shaping cooperation and even performance, often before a word is said.

Pair that with what we know about the brain's response to uncertainty (it reads ambiguity almost the same way it reads threat) and you start to see why a calm, regulated leader isn't just pleasant to have around. It's doing something physiological for the people near them.

I talk about this in episode 195 of my podcast, including the four pillars I use to protect my own regulation before a hard stretch at work even starts.

In episode 195 of The Burnout Recovery Podcast, I'm talking about something that sits underneath almost every leadership conversation I have, in coaching, in workshops, in keynotes : your team's wellbeing starts with yours. That's the starting point, from day one, whatever else is going on.

I share a real story from a tough stretch of ward cover I did a while back, walk through the research on why a leader's state affects a whole team, and give you four practical pillars for protecting your own capacity before you need it.

If you're used to being the support rather than needing it, this episode is going to land.

One of the harder parts of burnout recovery is the expectation that it should be faster. That a few good nights of sleep, a week off, or a change in roster will reset things. Sometimes it does. Often it doesn't.

Real recovery tends to be slower, messier, and less linear than that. There are better days and worse ones. Progress that's hard to see until you look back over a longer stretch of time.

If you're in the middle of that process right now, you're not failing at recovery. You're just in it. And that's exactly where you need to be. Be gentle with yourself.

Have a great week 😊
