This quote is a good reminder that a structured literacy approach caters for all students with none left behind. Every child deserves to learn to read using instructional approaches backed by reseach.

April is Autism Awareness Month.
About 370,000* Australians are Autistic, and each person has different strengths, interests, challenges and aspirations.
If you find out I'm Autistic, this is what I want you to know...
β’ Autism looks different for everyone.
β’ Fitting in can be exhausting for me.
β’ I feel things deeply, I just may not show it.
β’ I have been wearing a mask my whole life.
β’ My strengths and interests are what drive and motivate me.
β’ I am always listening; I just may not make eye contact.
β’ Things may seem calm on the surface, but underneath I am
working so hard.

As I was preparing lessons for the first week back in the Let's Learn Tutoring Room, I was again reminded about the importance of reading fluency.
Often teachers will tell parents their children are struggling with reading comprehension.
There is a strong correlation between reading fluency and reading comprehension. If a child is not fluent (i.e. they still sound out the words they read or read incorrectly), there is no cognitive energy left to focus on meaning.
According to Kilpatrick (2015), automatic and accurate word-level reading is achieved through the integration of three important factors:
β’ Automaticity with letter / sound knowledge (phonics)
β’ Phonemic awareness proficiency
β’ Repeated opportunities for the reading of connected text
