Inspired by the children's conversations about places across Australia, our preschool room has been exploring Australia’s landscapes, plants and animals through imaginative play. Together, they created a landscape with red earth, a lake, natural materials, native plants and Australian animal figures. The children moved the wooden figures through the scene, imagining everyday activities and adventures. One child announced, “Let’s go catch some food!” before taking a figure to the lake to catch a fish and bring it back to share.
As the children engaged in this experience, we talked about the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their continuing connections to Country. We discussed how knowledge of local environments, plants and animals has supported communities in different ways, while recognising that cultures and practices vary across Australia. The children’s questions and ideas helped us explore these topics together with curiosity and respect.
