This week, we are recognising two important occasions, Early Childhood Educators' Day and Australian Teacher Aide Appreciation Week.

At Southern Montessori, our Early Childhood Educators and Teaching Assistants play such an important part in the everyday lives of our students.

Their work goes well beyond supporting learning in the classroom. They build relationships, encourage confidence, celebrate achievements and help create an environment where children feel supported and ready to learn.

For our youngest children, our Early Childhood Educators help build those important early foundations, nurturing their curiosity, independence and development.

Our Teaching Assistants work alongside students and teachers across the School, offering support, encouragement and care in so many different ways throughout the day.

To all of our Early Childhood Educators and Teaching Assistants, thank you for everything you bring to our school community. Your contribution is appreciated and valued every day. 💙

🌿 Celebrating the Birthday of Maria Montessori 🌿

Today we celebrate the birthday of Dr Maria Montessori, the visionary educator whose work continues to inspire children and educators around the world.

Born on 31 August 1870, Maria Montessori dedicated her life to understanding children and developing an approach to education that respects their independence, curiosity and natural desire to learn.

Her belief that “The child is both a hope and a promise for mankind” continues to guide Montessori education today.
At Southern Montessori, we are proud to carry forward Maria Montessori’s vision by creating environments where children are encouraged to explore, discover, develop independence and become confident, capable learners.

What happens when different ages learn alongside one another? 🎸

Recently, some of our Year 6 students visited Preschool to share their guitar playing with some of our youngest learners.

It was a simple moment, but one that reflects an important part of Montessori education: the value of learning across ages.

Montessori environments bring children of different ages together, creating opportunities to observe, collaborate and learn from one another. Younger children can look to older peers as models, while older students have opportunities to share their skills, take responsibility and grow into leadership.

As children progress through the school, their role within the community changes too — from being inspired by others to having opportunities to inspire those who follow.

From a community need to a practical solution. 🔨

This year, a group of our Middle School students have been putting their learning into action through a hands-on construction elective.

After identifying a genuine need within our community, students designed and built a mobile workspace, repurposing old tabletops and legs to give existing materials a new purpose.

Along the way, they have been learning to safely use power tools, applying Mathematics through measurement, and developing skills in planning, problem-solving and collaboration.

The result is something practical, purposeful. The design of their next build is about to begin.

Where does learning lead? 🌱

In Montessori education, one discovery can spark another, helping children make meaningful connections across different areas of their learning.

In our Cycle 1 Reception classroom, an exploration of plants led to seeds. Seeds led to grains. Grains led to discovering how flour is made and that knowledge was put into practice as the children made their own playdough.

This is an important part of Montessori learning. Rather than experiencing knowledge only as separate lessons, children are given opportunities to explore connections, work with real materials and build understanding through hands-on experience.

When children can connect what they are learning with something they can see, touch and do, learning becomes more than something to remember - it becomes something they understand.

In Montessori education, physical development is an important part of educating the whole child.

This philosophy extends into Physical Education at Southern Montessori. Through activities that develop balance, coordination, agility and fundamental movement skills, children are also learning to participate with confidence, work with others, make decisions and persevere when something is challenging.

The goal is about more than sporting performance. PE provides opportunities to develop resilience, confidence and, importantly, an enjoyment of movement that can last a lifetime.

This reflects an important Montessori principle: Education is preparation for life.

Success in PE is not only measured by the scoreboard. It is also about helping children become healthy, confident and capable movers, for sport and for life.

Why does the environment matter in Montessori education?

In a Montessori classroom, the environment is carefully prepared to support each child’s growing independence.

Materials are thoughtfully organised, visible and accessible, allowing children to make purposeful choices, select their own work and return materials when they are finished.

It’s about more than an organised classroom. The prepared environment supports concentration, responsibility and care for shared spaces, while giving children an active role in their learning.

The environment isn’t simply where learning happens — it empowers children to direct their own learning.

Today, we celebrate the people who help our community thrive.

On Australian Primary Principals Day, we would like to recognise our Principal, Heather, and Assistant Principal, Alison, for the care, commitment and leadership they bring to Southern Montessori each day.

In Montessori education, leadership is not simply about leading from the front. It is about listening, observing and guiding; creating an environment where children are known and respected, staff are valued and supported to continue learning, and families feel connected to their community.

Heather and Alison embody this approach in so many ways — often through the conversations, decisions and thoughtful work that happen quietly behind the scenes.

Thank you, Heather and Alison, for your dedication to our children, staff and families, and for continuing to nurture a community where everyone has the opportunity to learn, contribute and flourish.

Finding our rhythm in Term 3.

Three weeks into the term, our classrooms are well and truly back in their rhythm - filled with concentration, collaboration, independence and curiosity.

From choosing work and exploring materials to learning alongside friends and teachers, these everyday moments are at the heart of Montessori education.

Each day brings opportunities to make choices, take responsibility and grow in confidence: one purposeful moment at a time.
