It’s here! The new Heavy Vehicle National Law is now in effect
From today, 1 August 2026, the amended Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) is live — the biggest reform to heavy vehicle regulation in over a decade.
What’s now in force:
- Higher General Mass Limits (GML now matches old CML)
- Longer vehicles allowed (up to 20m for certain combinations)
- New Heavy Vehicle Accreditation (HVA) scheme with stronger focus on Safety Management Systems
- Updates to fatigue management, work diaries & more
Whether you’re an operator, driver or part of the supply chain — the new rules apply from today.

Penalties under the HVNL are changing from 1 August 2026.
Serious safety breaches (like fatigue or false records) will attract **higher penalties**, while some lower-level administrative mistakes will have **lower penalties**.
The message is clear: focus on real safety risks, not just paperwork.
This is about making the system fairer but tougher where it matters most.
