I've been tutoring English over the last 10 years and I love it! My aim at the end of every tutoring session is to give my students enough confidence to tackle the challenges that lie ahead. Here's the truth 👉🏻 it's not possible to do well in in VCE English if your teenager doesn't have the expected vocabulary.

Poor grammar? We can work around that by writing shorter and simpler sentences.
Bad spelling? Not super important as long as the words are recognisable.
Small vocabulary? I'm sorry but there's no workaround for that 😞

Here's what you need to know:

🙅‍♀️It's not really about grammar, spelling or even knowing the book anymore!

English (in VIC) these days is all about whether or not your teenager can express their thoughts about the book 🤓

So, yes they need grammar and punctuation and knowing the book, but MORE importantly they need to have critical thinking.

Critical thinking in VCE English & EAL is whether or not your teenager can explain why they think something. We know teenagers are full of opinions but what makes a good English essay is whether or not your child can explain, with reference to the book, why they think that.

This is why all our 1-to-1 English tutoring sessions are based around discussion. Our tutors (gently) push our students to defend their thinking, and you can try these questions yourself with your teen:

❓Why do you think that?
❔How do you know?

TOP TIP: sometimes we preface these questions with 'I agree with you but explain it to me anyway' to ward off any defensive attitudes.
