📚 Book Week 2026 📚

Sharing photos of Book Week looks a little different for us this year, while we reflect on previous years and sharing photos of the children and their costumes, we now are mindful of sharing photos of children on our socials and keeping their privacy safe with us at the service.

We would love to share the photos of all of the effort that families have gone to in creating their children’s costumes, we’ve had plenty of Bluey, Spider-Man, Minnie Mouse’s, an Oompa Loompa, Wiggles Characters and many more!
We still think it’s important for us to share some of the great costumes that our educators have put together this year and the joy that’s shared during book week!

♻️ Recycled Material Play♻️

Last week, the toddlers engaged in a hands-on experience using natural and recycled materials to create a hanging bird attraction.

They explored sticks, twigs, natural fibres, recycled ribbons and wool/string. The children demonstrated curiosity and creativity as they wrapped, tied and arranged the materials around the sticks. They worked together, developing their fine-motor skills, coordination and problem-solving abilities. The children showed pride and excitement as they watched their creation take shape.

They were particularly interested in using the different textures and materials and discussing how their creation could attract birds to the outdoor environment.

🫛 Growing Beans & Living Things 🫛

Following from a previous visit to Wunghnu Primary School, the children in the 4 Year Old Kindergarten Room have been interested in living things after they planted bean seedlings.

After a few weeks of growing at the centre, Educator Maria took home the children seedlings and planted them in a bigger pot, bringing the pot back to the centre for the children to watch the beans grow and climb.

This lead to a learning experience being set up about living things, where vegetables grow and what they need to grow. Incorporating living things within the learning spaces teaches children core concepts of life cycles, ecosystems and grown and teaches the children the valuable lesson of patience and time, and that lots of hard work from farmers goes into growing all of the healthy foods that we eat! 🧑‍🌾

🧱 What does loose parts play look like in our Toddlers Room? 🧱

Loose parts are one of our most loved play methods and an important part of our curriculum, across the whole service.

In the Toddlers Room they are offered a variety of resources, ranging from blocks, to animals and arches and stones, that allow for children to build on their critical thinking, problem solving skills and fine motor control.

Through the use of intentional provocations provided within the space, children are able to make connections between these resources and the real world around them.

🍎🍊🍓 Farmers Market 🍓🍊🍎

This month, to extend on learning and conversations from last month our 4 Year Old Kindergarten chose to set up a farmers market in their dramatic play space.

The children helped make signs and labels for all of the resources needed, set up the space and had their say in what resources were needed. This allows for the children’s voices to be visible in their learning environment and they are able to revisit prior learning.

We are working hard to source resources that will last the test of time, with felt materials being sustainable and ethically made. The space feels extra special with a variety of lovely pumpkins donated by our wonderful educator Maria!

🌳🪾Bush Kinder 🪾🌳

Our much loved visits to the wetlands allow for the children to engage in the outdoors and turn the natural world around them into an active learning environment.

The children worked together to move sticks and branches and build structures, looked for insects and spotted birds in the trees.

These simple tasks allow for social skills to be built, communication in working together and hands on learning.

The research is clear 📚 reading aloud is one of the most powerful things we can do for our children.

When we read with a child, we’re doing far more than sharing a story. We’re building the foundations for language, confidence, curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.

Decades of research shows that children who are read to regularly:

💛 Build stronger language skills
Hearing rich varied language in books exposes children to far more words than everyday conversation alone. This growing vocabulary helps them understand, communicate and make sense of the world.

💛 Develop early literacy skills long before they learn to read
Through stories, children learn how books work – that print carries meaning, that pages turn left to right, and that stories have a beginning, middle and end. These early understandings make learning to read feel familiar and exciting.

💛 Strengthen phonological awareness
Rhymes, rhythms and playful sounds help children hear the building blocks of language.

💛 Grow their comprehension and thinking skills
Talking together about a story, predicting what might happen, wondering how a character feels, and connecting events to real life helps children develop memory, problem-solving, and higher-order thinking.

💛 Experience connection, comfort and joy
Shared reading fosters calmness, closeness, and moments of joint attention. These warm interactions support a child's sense of security and belonging.

Most importantly, children who experience positive, engaging reading moments from a young age are more likely to develop a genuine love of books - something that matters even more than early literacy skills alone.

Reading is simple, joyful, and sets children up for success in school and life.
