This interview with Dr G*i Lindsay from UOW is more focused on visual arts in early childhood education and care but still provides a window into how we (as adults) think about ourselves, whether a parent or a teacher. Do you think of yourself as 'musical'? If you like music, you are musical and it's usually not having had an opportunity to practice and develop your skills that makes you think you aren't musical. Our thinking about ourselves, even when we hold it inside, influences how our children think about themselves. So now is a great time to embrace your musical self and share it with your child. Sing songs, play with words, dance. This is brain-building, wellbeing-enhancing and fun for all of us, whatever age we are! πŸ₯°πŸŽ΅πŸ₯°

As Tuning In is part of Shoalhaven Youth Orchestra, our classes are also suspended until the end of Term 1 and we will look at all government advice and requirements to determine when we are able to resume. It's a sad but very important decision to contribute to the health of the community.

You can still contact us by any of the usual channels for information or to express interest in any of our classes.
We hope you all stay well! We will post updates to keep you informed about any decisions taken. Keep washing your hands really well everyone and sing while you wash because the best music is the music you make yourself. 😍

SYO response to COVID-19

Due to the current pandemic conditions, responses and recommendations from the Federal Government and recommendations from the NSW Department of Education, the Shoalhaven Youth Orchestra has decided to suspend all current operations including rehearsals, lessons and Tuning In! classes until further notice. This decision was not made lightly however our organisation believes it is important to be cautious and take precautionary measures to safeguard all parties associated with SYO and the wider community.

In the coming week SYO and SJS members will receive an emailed tailor-made rehearsal kit made by our ensemble conductors John Dunstan and Eryn Deys. Our conductors are working hard to prepare these valuable resource kits which will be a practical substitute for rehearsals. We look forward to continuing to see your musical development as a result. Tuning In! Participants will be receiving contact from the Tuning In! Manager shortly.

In addition to the suspension of our standard operations until further notice the SYO will also be postponing our annual camp (3-5 April) and our scheduled concert on Sunday 5 April. We look forward to providing these fantastic opportunities for our students in the near future and we cannot wait to show the public what our ensembles have been rehearsing all school term.

Updates regarding the recommencement of operations will be communicated to parents and students via SMS and email. Until otherwise communicated please be mindful there will be no staff to supervise students at the Nowra School of Arts or any other venue used for rehearsals and Tuning In! classes.

If we can leave you with a message it’s that we hope you remain safe, comfortable and remember the brilliance and importance of music making in trying times.
